But are you sure the bottleneck on the MPC is the IDE? I have plenty of Windows laptops running IDE drives and they are lighting fast compared to the MPC in regards to load speeds.

I used to think that the bottleneck was the Intel Strong Arm processor

As implied in this posting that I made from a response from Akai to me for a RFE (Request for Enhancement) to the AKai for the MPC 4000 to load samples while the sequencer is playing as the Z4/Z8 could...

But I also seem to remember a post on here from one of the developers (maybe the late and great Stephen Howell from Hollow Sun ... R.I.P.) can't remember who it was posted here on this forum (so somebody with good search skills might be able to find it), that the MPC 4000 and I think the Z4/Z8 has such long load times, because it has some algorithm that checks the integrity of the sample to ensure it's not corrupted.

I can't seem to find that post though. Maybe it was a personal email.


I've seen other people indicate the 2500 and 1000 via HD is quicker then the 4000. But I don't have either to compare. Maybe they dropped the "check" algorithm on those models?

my mpc 1000 is lightning fast loading with an IDE>CF>microSD conversion scheme i have installed.

Is any SSD gonna work with 4000? I've just read this topic, because I've got an issue with my MPC. It can freeze after 3-4 hours constantly work. I've spoken to my friend and he said it my be because of an old hard drive. What you guys think about that?

I think about SSD to sort this problem out, however I don't need that big SSD, because I use pendrive a lot. What else you can recommend in that case?

yeah if the hdd is failing to respond, the system can hang. also if your ram is corrupt the system could hang or crash or restart spontaneously etc.

trancend makes smaller SSD IDE drives. if you can afford it, i would just go for the largest drive you can find. 120GB is the limit the 4000 can see however. a pen drive works quite good.

dont expect infallible performance from an ssd

ssd will be a lesser draw on the system power wise, they will create less heat, and are silent

dont push 'no spin' and if you do let us know what happens

I too am interested in an actual IDE SSD, have been struggling with a SATA SSD + the Kingwin adapter for a little will now. I figure the issues must be the Kingwin bridge.
Has anyone tried an OWC SSD in the 4000?

Not the 3.5" ones that just come with an Addonics SATA to IDE adapter, but their actual 2.5 IDE SSDs?

Slightly cheaper than the Transcend, but since it has been reported as working probably the best option right now.

Thanks mate, if I buy one will report back re: it's performance.

Ended up running out during my lunch break to a local computer store and picked up the Addonics SATA/IDE adapter. So far running flawlessly out of the box, so everything points to the Kingwin bridge as the issue in my setup.
Still interested in an IDE SSD for the future but will see how this works out for a while.

I've done SSD and MPC see the SSD, however I cannot save anything and format SSD. There is a "invalid directory handle". Any idea how to solve it?

format it in the 4000?

I have tried but I'm not keen to do that. Another thing is after time my LCD screen flash on dark blue and I can hear some weird noises coming probably from power board. I knew it's not gonna be that easy in my case...

most likely you need a new hdd and you should ONLY format using the 4000 os
