High Hat Programming

Long time lurker, first time poster. Does anyone know what the technical term is for high hats that come in at:33 seconds in this video? F***** groovy. Triplets?

They are regular high hats at 1/16. What you hear is some hats have a lower/higher volume than others.
Mpc's can do this easily, just lightly hit the pads for low, harder you hit the pads more volume you get.

Doesn't even sound like velocity variation to me, just straight 16th notes with some steps left out.

I think the hats in his/her other track are much better. I like the style of both tunes though. :smoker:

Wow I haven't heard that one but you're right, the hats are definitely on point. I think hats are a huge part of whether or not I can dig a track. Would these hats be considered 1/16 as well? Definitely can hear a lot of variation and the hat groove stays pretty damn interesting.

I love high hats if you can't tell lol

Why not? I've noticed a lot of producers accelerate hat patterns to 1/32 (sometimes even 1/64) during intense parts of their songs.

I know a lot of producers double time the hats to add something to the drum pattern, I prefer varying all the drum elements instead of just doubling the hats. I have the same opinion about 4 on the floor beats where they do the same thing with the kick drum before a transition.. going from 1/4 to 1/8/ to 1/16 and then back to 1.4 after the transition. I just don't find it interesting. Are those techniques often heard in those genres? yes, of course. I just don't care about them.

if it doesnt sound good to someone it doesnt sound good to them haha. there doesnt exactly have to be a reason.

they have a time and place but generally i dislike any hihats that you cant play with your hands on the pads. hihat is an important element and when it sounds ultra synthetic (especially at 1/32 or 1/64) it just doesnt sound right to me
