Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Hththt555 Mon Nov 03, 2014 6:24 pm
anyone now of limitations if i run those 2 together.

mpc as master Seq of course and triggering mpc samples
+
asr with samples, also triggered by the mpc Seq and pads.

can i play samples from both mashines from the mpc pads and record sequences at the same time?

how would i best make use of the program limits of the mpc 2000?
how many tracks can i have in such a program.

sorry i have to start from zero with the mpc 2000 so these questions might be a bit chaotic.

I haven't used an ASR-X before. But I'll answer all the questions I can. If nobody responds with some more advice about the ASR-X, I'll move the topic in the Studio Setup and Gear Advice forum where more people might be able to help.

You should be able to do that very easily. In the 2K, you can assign the note numbers for each pad that you want to trigger on the ASR. All of the note data can be recorded in the 2Ks sequencer. I'm not sure how the ASR's sequencer works, since I've never used it. But the MPC is most likely the best sequencer out of the two.

Since the 2K only allows you to use one PGM at a time, my best advice is to narrow down all the samples you really want to use in a project into the 4 pad banks. It didn't take long for me to get used to that, coming from the 1000 where I was loading more PGMs than I really needed. It was overkill. The limitations of the 2000 force you to be more selective with your samples. That's always a good thing since you won't waste time loading samples that you might not use. You'll be making beats a lot quicker.

Anyway, the ASR-X and the MPC2000 should be a very cool combo to work with. Hopefully more people can chime in about the ASR-X. If you got any more questions about the MPC2000, let me know.

thanks for the straight forward help!
yes i also think the combo will be great. sampling chopping, resampling editing and sound is just so good with the asr.

i do have and probably will have more questions to the 2k.

1)how many pads do i have for each pad bank? only the 16 or is it 16x4 per bank or something like that?

2)to keep thinks logical i would probably have one pad bank reserved for the ASR X and the others for 2k internal samples right? So i suppose tracks from all 4 pad banks do play back when i play a sequence!?

3)how do you mix on the fly with the 2k. Like muting tracks, activating and deactivating a fill here and there? if the workflow is good i would probably like to do most of that in mixdown vs adding sequences after each other. But if thats a worse workflow i will learn the other way.

4) one thing that turns me off a bit is the need to name and order samples before editing them in the mpc. i think i have to do that stuff before i can lay them out on the pads and chop etc, right?

5) can you think of any way to route the audio output of both samplers together without a mixer? my recording interface is a multi tool (yamaha thr10) very sweet, but i will only have a stereo instrumnent jack as final input. so i need to bundle the ASR and MPC sound before i go into the TH10. Can i route the ASR audio out through the MPC? does it have something like a through?
otherwise i might be able to do so in the ASR but am not sure.

6) general practice hints for the 2k workflow?

thanks!

just watched some 2k tutorial

what i wonder is, if i have all drum sounds in one Pad Bank wich should suffice being 16 sounds, how does this correspond to tracks if i want to mute tracks while mixing down?

usually i have HH,KICK;Snare ets on different tracks to mute them by themselfs.
How is this usually done in the MP?

thanks

16 pads for each bank X 4 banks. So you have a combination of either 64 samples and/or MIDI notes total.

That works out well since the MPC2000 has 32 voice polyphony. So using the other 2 pad banks for the ASR will play back as you record them along with the samples on the first two banks.

Track Mutes will do exactly what you're looking for. But they are not recordable on the MPC2000. Keep the tip that jonestown massacre provided in mind, and you'll move along fairly quick.

4) one thing that turns me off a bit is the need to name and order samples before editing them in the mpc. i think i have to do that stuff before i can lay them out on the pads and chop etc, right?

When you sample in the MPC, it'll automatically name your samples as "Sound000". "Sound001" and so on. You can rename them any time. The only thing aside of remembering which sample is which if you don't rename them is when saving them on discs, that you don't have any duplicate names for different samples. The MPC2000 does not have a file structure with different folders. All of the data is on one main directory of the disc.

5) can you think of any way to route the audio output of both samplers together without a mixer? my recording interface is a multi tool (yamaha thr10) very sweet, but i will only have a stereo instrumnent jack as final input. so i need to bundle the ASR and MPC sound before i go into the TH10. The MPC2000 doesn't have Input Thru like the MPC1000 (JJ OS). I miss having that feature, since I used to own one. The only workaround you have it when recording to DAW, have both machines synced to MIDI clock and record each machine in separate passes. For just listening and working without the DAW, it really would pay to buy a cheap mixer for under $100.

6) general practice hints for the 2k workflow?

It's a fairly simple workflow, since it's limited compared to newer technology these days. Everyone's work habits are a bit different to some degree. You'll find your own niche in the limitations and the simplicity, and hopefully you'll enjoy it for what it is. I find that I focus more on making a good beat rather than getting too technical with it like a DAW or an MV.

thanks!

You might assign a track to MIDI when you want to play the ASR-X sounds from the MPC sequencer, and use any/all of the 4x16 pad banks to play the ASR-X sound from that MPC MIDI track, and change to an MPC Drum track when you want to play internal MPC samples.

Sort of, but not exactly.

A MPC Drum program, which controls the internal MPC sample engine, has 4 pad banks that you can assign 64 samples to.

On an MPC2000, you can only have one active Drum program in use at once, across all the tracks. On an MPC2000XL, you can have up to 4 different active Drum programs in use at once.

MIDI allows up to 128 MIDI notes to be used on each MIDI channel/MIDI track, which can be received from and/or sent to external MIDI devices, but you can only assign the middle 64 MIDI notes to MPC pads.

Hththt555 wrote:when you say " assign a track to MIDI" is this the same as one of the 4 pad banks in a PGM?

Assigning a track to MIDI, means that you change it from Drum to MIDI, and it sends any data on the track only to an external MIDI port, not to the internal MPC Drum sample engine.

Assigning a track to Drum, means that it sends any data on the track to the internal MPC Drum sample engine, but you can also assign a MIDI channel/port to that track, so that it sends any data on the track to both the internal MPC Drum sample engine as well as to an external MIDI port, at the same time.
