MPC 4000 super crash!

when it powers it used to just hang at AKAI page with no hard drive spin up and then I removed the drive placed another one in it and same thing, removed RAM, tested hard drive power removed hard drive ribbon cable then it will spin up, plug it back up still stuck! tried placing the jumper pin on the L SHAPED BOARD TO PROGRAM when I did that I think it blew the OS completely out. still no drive activity when power up and now no Os. is this an Os problem or a hardware issue. before crash anything regarding effects would lock it up.. help!!

I have also tried the Os loader before i went forward with blowing out the Os!
is the systems Os on the hard drive or Rom? can it boot without the hard drive?

yes the machine will boot without a drive.

remove the HD and try booting, then report back what happens.

nothing at all....blank screen now

think about calling a repair shop.

the only two shops I would trust to work on my unit are in California

I'm going to try to place it in program mode and load the Os from a PC or mac and see what happens..

well I loaded a lower Os version and it still gets to the Akai MPC 4000 page but won't go any further with the newer Os showing up. any ideas?

well after tearing this thing down and testing and chasing every possible problem it came down to either the cpu board or the effects card and testing each, when I removed the effects card the unit fired up with no issues and no problem. put the effects card back in and the unit froze again in the same location. took some time to clean the terminals on the effects card and the same issue! WINNER IS! THE EFFECTS CARD!!!

The thing about it is that I would not recommend anyone trying this teardown without engineering knowledge of electronics. getting to the effects board was serious and the whole MPC has to be broken down to get to it. this was not a easy fix!

I keep warning people of this, it aint no joke.

I'm beginning to suspect there was a flaky batch of FX cards at some stage, when things were belly up at Akai quality control evaporated with the quickness. My FX card simply stopped working one day, and that was it. Removal, cleaning and reseating did nothing.

Yep, I have a Z8 that doesn't boot with the effects card installed.

who needs akai effects?

Who wants what they paid for to work?
