JJOS updates are over ?

I looked at the updates on the JJ web site. The last one for JJOS2XL was 1st of july, ie over 4 months ago. Early 2014 at some point, updates were almost monthly. I do certainly understand that these updates are not "required" or "due" at all by JJ (who may have other things to do and thanks to him for all his work !) but are we to consider that the current version of JJOS2XL is the final version ??

He updates as we are reporting serious flaws and he fixes if possible, not connected to any specific time period.

Yeah bugs can still be fixed but don't expect additions of new features in the current versions at this moment.

i've been out of the jj game for about a year now due to the need for a larger RAM bank for live shows. 16 songs plus vsti requirements are simply not feasible for my mpc workflow. furthermore, sample editing, stretching, warping etc are far superior on software platforms than they could ever be on MPCs due to processing limitations.

i still have utmost respect for jj and his associates for their work. what they did changed my career and my attitude toward the tools i use. to this extent, i owe any success i have to them and several other music technology developers/dev teams.

my very subjective, perpetually underinformed opinion is that JJ would be most fortunate developing modular VST plugins for software hosts. for example: a guy recently used REAPER's api to build a VSTi for REAPER only that emulates Ableton's session view. when the foundation is there, use it.

midi is our common language. those that freak it make a lasting imprint on popular music. MPCs were behind the times in 2004. woefully so, compared to software solutions. we were dealt a platform that was less powerful than many of the cell phones that we carried -- then -- in our pockets.

as far as midi is concerned, that is not an issue. midi is data. effortless, tiny data. audio is greedy. it needs so much effort and resources to process. mpcs are not equipped for this, by design. they would always have been better served by investing in software instead of hardware. they got to that game too late, and too entrenched in
antiquated development models.

they were eaten alive by their own marketing. which, i'll continue to argue, has been toeing the line of genre based racism for years on end.

in dec i'll have been on this forum for 10 years...i'm very proud to have seen what i saw happen here. this specific little forum shaped an entire generation of gear -- and hopefully more importantly, what consumers expect from the gear/software they buy.

As a consumer I would be happy if companies would deliberately stop crippling their products to quickly sell their next crippled products.

Are OS2XL users supposed to update to OS3? Or is that version still inferior in most ways such as lacking ND Chopping.

Personally I think OS3 is a failure but a lot of guys like it. So just try it and make your own choice

I would say that there's no smooth transition from os2xl to os3. I haven't tried it for a while but as long as I remember I really disliked the new trim mode and its shortcuts (waveform, zoom, no NDC and so on), some changes in GRID EDIT and MAIN screen. What I liked is TEMPO in TRIM mode and TRACKS EDIT mode. The latter really lacks in OS2XL. But this is for my personal workflow so the best is always to try by yourself and make your own opinion.

I think it's probably a good OS for the big screen. But without any new functions added or modified since February for 128XL I don't think it's a good investment.

OK, so what I'm getting is that the OS3/OS128XL vs. OS2XL debate is really about user preference and workflow.

When you used the word "failure", it made me think that there are still some showstopping bugs in OS3 or defect that made it somehow useless.

Yeah the word "failure" was excessive.
It's just that it was marketed as a trial version of OS128XL on a small screen.
I would have preferred to pay for a full OS with support rather than that OS3. But as you said it's a matter of preference and workflow so case closed

Been away from my equipment for a little while now.....A few months back I did give OS3 a test run for about 2 weeks. I liked it. For the way I work in my mpc1k I felt I lost nothing moving to OS3. Os2xl's NDC was a godsend....but OS3 chopping (NDC slicing) was more appealing to me bcuz #1 I chopped less with my eyes and more so my ears; #2 chopping/trimming in program edit mode is nice; #3 OS2xl's ndc had a max 32 chops where OS3's max is 64. My cousin has a MPC2000 and the OS3 sample record page reminds me of the 2000 with its metering and its live sample waveform view. Again this was only a 2 week run I had with it. I plan on spending alot of time with the mpc during the winter break. Not saying OS3 is better, but for me I felt comfortable with it and its new quirks.

I have a LONG, LONG list of bugfixes, stupidities, feature suggestions and wishlist ideas, if jj is in need of something to do.
