Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000
By kday Sat Oct 18, 2014 7:00 pm
When I play a midi note in from a keyboard into the MPC 4000, the midi notes goes right back out the midi out and doubles up the keyboard sound to make the keyboard sound sounds like it's flanging when playing the keyboard to record a sequence.

Is there a way or filter or stop midi notes from going back out the midi outs and back into the keyboard to re-trigger midi notes as i play to record into the MPC?

I'm hearing double notes as I record into the sequence with the track channel the sames as the midi channel in the keyboard.

Thanks for the help guys,

Ok local does work as a workaround.

I was hoping to find some kind of local or filter switch in the MPC that would do this automatically without having to always cut the local off in every keyboard, considering the MPC was created with the best sequencer in the world, but yet has a serious flaw that require users to find a setting in their keyboard if the keyboard has a local switch to keep their sequencer from being almost a failure to me personally because it plays two sounds instead of one when using a keyboard. I guess I'll go to the keyboard to solve the MPC problem here. lol

Not a workaround, serious flaw, or MPC problem, but standard practice when using a MIDI keyboard with a sequencer.

That is why the Local On/Off setting exists in most MIDI keyboards.

Other MPCs do have the option to change the MPC Soft Thru function, but the MPC4000 doesn't seem to have that.

Hi !

Hello I m new here ! :worthy:

few questions... have mpc 4K for a month now

I m currently planning my studio... quite complex... Mpc main sequencer master clock.. + other devices acting like slave sequencer (ef 303, EMX..) to trig what I want (mpc sequencer, mpc sampler, external synth and samplers). A master midi keyboard, and a synth i want to play on too..
I have a midipatchbay motu timepiece .

So after long research... and draw schemes..

it seems the mpc 4K is not capable to route (midi thru) message if we are not on the current track... that's mean... I can only send midi out from the current mpc track ? right ? Impossible to play/ear gear just missing with midi Channels on a masterkeyboard, alternative sequencer etc ?

Because, I understood that, so I thought i will send directly the infos from keyboard alternative sequencers etc on the patchbay and route them in parallel on mpc to trig its sampler as a soundmodule, also trig its sequencer for record in mpc this alternative sequences, keyboard etc when needed, and also send them on the external synths, samplers etc /....

But... I guess that when I will go on the "current track" to record something the mpc will trigger the module and the master midi keyboard will trigger the same on the external gear...so it will overlap... I hoped that I could desactive the direct midi out in the case ('soft thru ?") and just feed the sequencer when he will record ...but it seems impossible too....

So ..

Maybe I'm wrong but ...

But I feel like Mpc 5000 will do this better for my setup (not sure but on spe's manueal I understood this could be possible or with Mpc1K , 2500 JJOS2XL but want to avoid those two , not enough ppqn ) ... .
..t I really like the mpc4000 so If you have idea for a work around or experience with this I will be happy not change...

Thanks , sorry it was quite long to explain because of the lot of elements...

Hi,

Thanks for reply 313 studio tricks...

Yes I post this is because I don't find a way to configure Mpc4k nor motu patchbay for my setup ... maybe I left something .. i just want the mpc send the sequencer part to midi out , but not the notes it receives from outside ,... at contrary the other method is mpc send constantly what it receives, but not only for the current track but for everytrack....

So what you say " configure your motu? configure control routing on the mpc 4000?" yes that's what I m after but I don't know how to do this, and for the moment I feel it's impossible...

For the PPQN, I often play/program 64th notes and micro timing stuff for sample experimentation or basically hi hat & snares groove and rolls etc, i grabbed a mpc1K month agos (my first one) and it was hard to translate what have in mind with 96 ppqn, constantly micro editing with shuffle tricks on the jjos2xl grid... longer and result not better... (don't want to mess with double tempo trick because I use other sequencers arpegiators etc)

I was thinking about mpc5000 could be the one for my need/imagination, but I'm not sure if it will resolve the problem I have with the lovely 4k..

If anyone has a workaround with the 4k for such configuration or precise idea it will be very cool...

Thanks !

Hey yeah sorry I can't lampdog because I don't have a camera even on my phone ... looool

For the moment I just test with midi keyboard, mpc 4k and a synth.. don't yet involve midipatchbay because on the paper it seems absurd

The routing in mpc is

on "Midi" page / (F1)Routing "midi in I : (destination ) Sequencer
midi in II : (destination) Sequencer
drum pad : (destination) Sequencer"

(F2) Filter Midi I " Off "
Midi II " Off "

on "Misc" page Active track receive channe : All

Routing on Midi Keyboard "channel 1"
External Synth "Channel 1"

on main page "Track 1"
out 1 : out A : ........... 1 hey  //////////

Maybe I can just assign "any channel" for all tracks ... this way the mpc is able to route out any channel all the time ... not depending on the current track of the mpc screen... simple ... !:)

Now I need to see if I can find a way to trig the internal sound of mpc in the same manner (receive external note message all the time, not depending on current track and ability to record in the sequencer when needed , have the feeling it could be possible using Int A or Int B + multis : =) maybe yes maybe no, but is not so important than the synth part but need to focus on this )

Thanks..... no photo but a possible solution seemed to arrive when I write down here...

Yes ..

for the internal sampler ! I ve now assigned on the other out aviable on the main page "Int A : ch : any"

"Program" , I can create as many program i need ... I tested with Prog 1 kick, assign to prog 1 (have got only a kick on one note on this program) , prog 2 Snare assign to prog 2 (only a snare on one other note on this one )

"multi" ; F3 (midi) part 1, prog = "kick" , channel 10A
part 2, prog = "snare", channel 10A

Now when I play electribe emx sequencer It rules, even if i move on other track and because I made 2 program I can also modify the sound of the snare or the kick and not both at same time because it was one of my other goal, with q link etc (with a midi translator i will grab asap I can do this directly using the electribe interface for each part )...

Now I can do the same thing for everything plugged... , I m preparing also to do a bunch of midi filtering to avoid mpc overload

Thanks... if I sucess to plug everything without bug, I will tell you..

Separation of elements in 4k allows for this like this. It's like building blocks. No one block does everything, gotta combine features to get other features sometimes. That's why I didn't reply back, I saw you were on the right track and would come to a solution soon. Once you live through it, you remember, it sticks.
