Sampling Chain (Gear for Sampling)

How's it going yall?

So for me I typically use my sp404sx (definitely not the best choice) to eq and at times process what ever I sample before it hits the MPC but I've seen cats like BLACK MILK use a Graphic Equalizer atleast for EQing.

I typically stay away from dirty records in order to cut down on the amount of artifacts also but are there any other pieces of gear or methods you cats use to get your samples sounding just right?

*I also EQ with Logic and Waves at times*

I often use a Graphic EQ too. Where have you seen Black Milk usin it?
I use the Overtone GEQ from Voxengo (Freeware)
Its has 7 bands but the frequencies are not fixed (so its not a typical graphic eq like the hardware ones)
I made two presets with frequenies of old DJ mixers (Numark 1650 and GLi PMX 9000) cause these mixer EQs were sometimes used in the sampling chain back then (Pete Rock talked about that too in an interview).
I like what it sounds like.

Another EQ I really like is the SonEQ from sonimus. Really good sounding EQ IMO.

Numark DM-1650 and GLi PMX-9000 were most popular DJ mixer back then. Both had EQ. I think most of hip hop producers in early 90s' were using either Numark or GLi mixer, so naturally they were using it for sampling.
I use Numark DM-1650 for EQing, but I personally like to use photo-amp for sampling.
(Of the topic) I've been looking for a replacement crossfader (slide potentiometer) for Numark DM-1650 for long time.
I think because of nostalgia, I like DJ mixers around that era.

Older electronics were definitely built differently than the mixers of today.

Been running my turntable into a MonoMachine for some tinkering. Usually nothing too major but you can get wild & out as you see fit. The MnM is wonderful for processing external audio, kinda bummed I didn't find out about all this earlier.

I pipe my turntable into my patchbay, from which it can be sent to anything I need to send it to.

For a long time i connected my TT to an old HiFi-Amp and from there to my MPC.

At some point i got my first phono-pre and later a mixing desk. I always go from the phono-pre into the mixing desk, and from there i can use "master out B" to send any signal i want (turntable, instruments, whatever is connected to the mixer) to the sampler of my choice.

I've started with a mackie mixer, now have a midas. The phono-pre i'm using is a cambridge audio, which sounds almost too audiophile i often think. I also have a vestax pmc05, never tried it for sampling, but made some small comparisons... while i think it sounds WAY WORSE than the cambridge audio phono pre together with the midas, i think it could be good to use it for sampling... just a theory, but i think in oldschool Hip Hop you don't really want an audiophile sounding sample, and something that sounds "limited", "compressed", doesn't have much bandwith... is maybe preferable... gotta experiment sometime.

Good shit! I'll run my audio through my octatrack as a thru machine. That way I can add effects
