i have my mpc1k with jjos2xl hooked up to my s950 via midi. when i trigger the tone program in the s950 using the pads on the mpc, everything sounds good. pad 1 in bank A triggers the lowest tone and pad 16 in bank D triggers the highest tone. but whenever i sample a new sound at c3_60 using the s950, the chromatic assignment acts strange. when i get to pad 9 in bank D the pitch starts going lower instead of higher. i cannot figure out what i'm doing wrong. anyone encounter this problem before, have any ideas, advice? :hmmm: thanks in advance!

a more straight forward explanation of my problem is as follows:

1. connect mpc to s950 via midi
2. power on both machines
3. activate midi channel 1a on mpc
4. use pads to trigger tone program on s950 (works as it should) pad 1a is the lowest tone and pad d16 is the highest

but then when i...

5. record a new sample into s950 at default setting (c3_60)
6. replace "tone" sample with "new sample" on s950's program page
7. use pads to trigger new sample

then the problem occurs: pad 1a is the lowest, pad d8 is the highest. pads d9-d16 sound lower than they should.

its bugging the ish outta me. the tone program works fine. all i'm doing is changing the sample in the tone program, no other adjustments. but when i do that, the last 8 pads in bank d don't sound the way they should.

the problem happens whether i use a drum track or a midi track, and it occurs no matter what sound i try to sample. i've tried all sorts of sounds. to clarify the problem a little further... once i sample a new sound in and try to play the chromatic scale moving from low to high, everything is fine until i get to bank d. when i said that the last 8 pads sound strange, what i meant to say is that pads d9-d16 have the same exact tone as pads c13-d4. i've come up with 3 fixes:

1. simply change the sample back to "tone" on the s950 program page
2. change the nominal pitch of the new sound to g3#_68 on the s950 edit sample page
3. re-record the sample into the s950 at g3#_68 instead of the default c3_60

this makes me think that it's something wrong with the s950. especially since simply changing the sample back to "tone" fixes the issue. it's as if the new sample isn't actually being recorded at the default c3_60 even though that is what i leave it set to.

i suppose i could just start sampling everything at g3#_68, but that still doesn't get to the root of the problem. i'd really like to figure out what is actually causing the problem instead of using some work around to resolve the issue. thanks for your help!

Well, if just by renaming the sample it fixes the problem you could do this each time.

Otherwise , it might be an issue with the default monitor program. If you haven't already done it, you should try to create your own default program and see if it works better.

NAME OF SAMPLE TO BE MONITORED
Monitor
This page allows you to hear the sound you are sampling through the MONO MIX
output on the back of the S950. It is also possible to monitor the new sample
in context with an existing program.

02 Select program Monitor
This is the same as the page we found in the REC mode and it allows you
to monitor either the sample directly or in context with a program.

it's not that renaming the sample fixes the problem. if i go to the keygroup assignment page under edit program on the s950 and leave "tone" as the selected sample, all of the pads play the way they should. but if i change the actual sample on that page from "tone" to my newly recorded sample, then the pads don't play the way they should. i'll look into creating my own monitor program to see if that works, but my gut is telling me that something else is causing the problem. i also made a short video documenting the problem. sorry about the audio, my phone doesn't pick up bass very well. but since the problem occurs on the high range, you can get the gist of it.

then while staying on that same page (keygroup assignment), all i have to do is switch back to "tone" from my newly recorded sample and magically all of the pads trigger properly again. change it back to my new sample, and the problem reappears.

No problem. The video is good and the issue clearly identified.

When you rename your sample as "TONE" it is automatically used with the TONE program. With another name it's associated with the default monitor program. So I think it's worth checking this.

Likewise, don't hesitate to go to the mpc3000/60 section and ask there. I'm sure an old timer will have an answer :)

i think we're miscommunicating. i'm not renaming the tone sample. i'm sampling a new sound, then switching the tone sample with my new sample on the keygroup assignment page under program edit. but i will look into creating a new monitor program. thanks again for helping me try to nail down the issue.

You're welcome. I must say I'm not an expert and I haven't used the s950 recently.
In your video are you recording B3 as C3? Did you stay in Trim mode and just press a pad? But if I remember well you said it was the same for all kind of samples right?
Sorry I can't help much :(

No worries, I appreciate you offering to help. Maybe someone else will chime in soon. Yep, the sound I sampled was a b3 note, but I sampled it into the s950 at midi note c3_60. And yes, the same thing happens no matter what the sample is.
