Multi Timbre // Offset channel // Soft thru - Issue

i'm using the mpc 1000 (jjos2xl 3.43) combined with a mutitimbral synth. so far, i've been using the "In offset channel 2"-option and everything worked out nicely. had it set to +8, so channel 1 was recieved by mpc-track 9.

then, the following problem occured:
after playing around with the Soft thru-option, the mpc's 'midi in 1' (where the midi-out-data form the multitimbral synth came in) was not able to perform the offset-channel-trick anymore – channel 1 could only be recieved by track 1. however, after plugging the midi-jack into 'midi in 2', it all worked out fine again (& also gave the hint that it's not a cable problem …).

so i've just been asking myself – what's going on with 'midi in 1'? any way to fix it? anybody ever had the same problem? any future problems that might occur?
btw., is it safe to perform "Soft thru: AS TRACK" in parallel to "Multi timbre: ON"?

are you programming mpc from synth or other way around?

The offset should be setup if you have two synth / sampler units from the one midi cable, and need to send data to both, so you set an offset on the receiving unit so it knows the data from channel 8+ is for synth B, everything before is for synth A.

i'm a bit unsure as to why you would need to use the offset function with one synth, even if it is multitimbral, as you can already program 16 channels of data without a hiccup.

or am i missing something?

synth and mpc are connected via midi-handshake. the only reason i set the offset is because i wanted to keep channels 1-8 available for mpc-based drum tracks , as it is easier for me to remember/mute key tracks during performance (e.g. you have the BD on Tr1, SD Tr2, HH Tr3, ..., or whatever floats your boat).

i know this problem may seem a bit of bean counting (as i'm still able to perform the way i want via 'midi in 2'), but i've just been wondering why the offset for 'midi in 1' stopped working from one moment to the other, and i don't know why but i tend to be hooked by mpc-problems very easily...

initial goal was: expanding the mpc/synth setup with an additional bass sound module. midi-keyboard-data from one of the synth-channels comes into the mpc, can be sequence recorded and is passed on via soft-thru option to the bass sound module.

yeah thats sweet, but just leave your first 8 mpc tracks blank and start your midi on track 9, doesnt need an offset still. unless your using a PC to sequence the MPC! Drums don't need a midi channel

Ive also not used Multitimbral mode (so the reason i may be giving slightly wrong information), but have no issues sequencing my s900 which is daisy chained to my korg module, the only reason i have a track offset (in my korg module) is because it sits after the s900, so i needed to tell it to use only data after track 1 (track 1 always s900).

Will check my midi settings on the mpc1000 when i get home (about an hour or so) and let you know what they are set as.

trawling the jjos2xl manual, i found out that the offset-option is actually only possible for 'midi in 2', which makes proper sense, as it is called 'in 2 Offset channel'
didn't use the setup for quite a while so i think i just forgot about the fact and stubbornly plugged into 'midi in 1' ...
