Ren Preamps Latency When Rec Vocals in Pro Tools 10?

Am I the only one using the Renaissance as my Pro Tools HD 10 interface when recording the artist's vocals?

When I am recording vocals into Pro Tools HD 10 using the Renaissance's mic preamps, I introduce so much latency into the session; she has to back off the mic and take one headphone cushion off her ear just to diminish the delay.

I recorded 3 tracks this way and I have been through the MPC-Forums search with no clear answer. I figure there might be SOMEONE that has found proper success recording vocals into Pro Tools HD 10 using JUST the Renaissance.

What's the proper settings in Playback Engine or the I/O windows for the Ren, maybe?

A few factors involved.. Would depend on project load(pluginseffects) how many tracks running, Computer spec... and playback io settings...

IF you can(i'm not sure how protools monitoring system works) but routing it in a way where it's not sending input signal back to ren interface outputs..(while recording) Then using the mix knob on the ren to blend between the input(preamps) and computer playback(protools track playback)

I had this issue just using a 003 .. Then Realizing it has no way of direct monitoring... (using pro tools 8le) IT was a while back so i'm going from memory, but i adjusted the playback settings to have a small buffer setting. And bounced a two track print of the beat to save resources for recording the vocal tracks in a new project...

and...if it helps anyone else.....I have a HD session I was pulling up looking for HD interface and the REN was holding it's own after I toyed with the Playback Engine and dialed it in but delayed alot.----- until i started a FRESH TEMPLATE; then I was able to record tight vocals even with plug-ins.

Make sure the Hardware Buffer is as low as your computer can handle when recording. 64 or 128 is the minimum you should use for tracking. Would probably also help if you disabled delay compensation as well. And the mix knob on the Ren should be in the middle (12:00 position). After tracking you can raise the buffer back up to 1024 and add a bunch of plugins.

Kool. Thanks for the info. Thats the "Old Trick" settings for playing a delay-problemed VST-keyboard also. Then to hear it back you would open up the Buffer pass 256 just to stop the crackling in playback but you couldnt add anymore notes untill you put it back on the lowest settings to stop the latency.

I wouldn't really call it an old trick so-to-speak. It's really just digital recording 101; record low, mix high (the buffer).
