compressor buying ?

hey i really wanted santa to bring me an Avalon compression unit, but that didn't happen,.
what are some good alternatives to those units that are not as expensive?

Avalon are a good tracking compressor for vocals/bass/keyboards...........but not for drumz.

If you have cash then get

ALAN SMART (SMART RESEARCH C1) He designed the SSL Mixbuss Compressor which is deadly on drumz.

If on a budget then get a BSS 401 (SOUL II SOUL/TEDDY/JERKINS/MANY MORE!!!!!

There's a link to it on the left. I haven't personally owned one, but a friend does and it just ROCKS on everything. It doesn't hurt that the whole signal path is analog, either....heheheh

BTW, don't be fooled by the price. I know a lot of $200 outboard sucks, but this thing really really does live up to the hype. You'd think you were running through a ~$1000 compressor easily. Nice.

Do you want 'invisible' level control, or do you want a compressor that you can hear working, one that changes the sound?

If you're looking for the latter you might want to look for a tube (valve) compressor, such as TL Audio's Ivory 5021(mkII), or MindPrint's T-comp. Also, optical compressors have a very distinctive sound. Check JoeMeek/TFPro for some hot optical compressors.

I only have one compressor at the moment, and it's a Focusrite Compounder, which is banging on drums and bass. Gives a really solid, heavy sound. I often strap it over the whole drum submix, but I'd like to complement it with a 5021mkII so I'll have a seperate compressor for 2 mono channels, like kick and bass, or kick and snare.

Also DBX compressors give a nice punch on a budget, and the FMR RNC is highly rated by just about anybody.

Save your cash, and just sample other folks drums. It already has all the compression, from the best compressors. There is a reason why some are priced cheap, and other are x-tra expensive.. your not gonna get avalon quality from a behringer.

yeah i mainly want it for the low end, drums and bass for that extra punch.

That project has been held up for a lil while, but it's still in the works. Shoe's is doing a lot of things, including sending some of my tracks (and other producers) to folks that we don't have direct contact with. (Alcoholics, Arsonists and a bunch of other east/west coast cats that I don't remember offhand) I just had a few tracks sent off to Phat-Kat (barak records), had my first studio session with a Detroit Artist 'Loe Lewis,' (Cardi boys founder) and almost had a track on Marv-Won's cd (From the movie 8 mile). Baatin (Ex Slum village member) is asking for tracks, and of course, he will get what he wants. But truthfully, I've completely had a change of heart when it comes to this music s#it. I enjoy making it, and that's number one. As far as makinig a career out of it, I don't look for anything anymore. Seems like everyone that can make a 1 bar loop is looking to sell a beat. I've had so many close deals that didn't go down that I don't get excited anymore. So I make the beats for myself, and I could care less about sound quality, pro-tools, and all that other stuff. If my tracks don't make me any money, I'm not spending anything else on it. When I went to the studio and had the engineer do his magic, I was really amazed that I produced my own track. haha, so I know how my music will sound when recorded properly. Ohh well, let me not go on Lets just enjoy doing what we do... bangin' pads!
