midi is our common language. those that freak it make a lasting imprint on popular music. MPCs were behind the times in 2004. woefully so, compared to software solutions. we were dealt a platform that was less powerful than many of the cell phones that we carried -- then -- in our pockets.
as far as midi is concerned, that is not an issue. midi is data. effortless, tiny data. audio is greedy. it needs so much effort and resources to process. mpcs are not equipped for this, by design. they would always have been better served by investing in software instead of hardware. they got to that game too late, and too entrenched in
antiquated development models.
they were eaten alive by their own marketing. which, i'll continue to argue, has been toeing the line of genre based racism for years on end.
in dec i'll have been on this forum for 10 years...i'm very proud to have seen what i saw happen here. this specific little forum shaped an entire generation of gear -- and hopefully more importantly, what consumers expect from the gear/software they buy.

i've never used the audio side of mpcs a ton usually more for playing around/screwing with audio. hardly ever save it on the mpc, i just record it elsewhere. could never really be bothered to spend all that time loading and saving a lot of audio.
but. i think mpc, especially with all the work jj has done, still has a lot of value as a midi sequencer, depending on your setup.
if jj is looking for something new/challenging to do...
imo it'd be interesting to go all mpc60 on the os, use like 2megs of ram for samples!...if he could use the added ram and processing power for working the midi side of things.like some yamaha midi sequencers can do midi delay or harmonization. reverse? "note repeat" functionality for tracks, so you could change the timing of each, like if they were 1/16, 1/8, etc live with the pads, kinda level up the arp? or like how you can do fake time stretching with audio on the mpc, being able to do that with midi live? would be fun.
maybe spdif could be repurposed for smpte sync or something like that?
dunno just thinking out loud for fun.
