Replacement Floppy disk drive for MPC-2000 classic question

Hi Folks
My MPC classic floppy disk drive gives Disk Write errors only when saving big files
eg a stereo sample over 2 secs (it can format disks and same small samples fine!)
so i guess its time to replace the drive?
Any advise of what model to buy --will any PC floppy drive work

I would suggest you get a CF-card reader (you can get those for the classic right?)

Otherwise I would really look up the specs, I dont think its as simple as picking any drive.


zip drives are also an option, however I've heard they are known for corrupting with time.


Look up CF-reader, thats what I use for my 3k and damn Im loving it!

It's not easy to install CF reader on 2000 classic; there is no IDE port nor SCSI port in the unit.
Anyway, the answer to the OP is, yes, you can use pretty much any floppy drive for PCs.
Installing Gotek USB Floppy Drive Emulator may not be a bad idea, but I've heard that it is not easy to set it up and use.

Don't want to use an external zip drive --two many cables and a internal Zip drive or Internal Card reader is not an option on the MPC 2000 classic !!!

Those will do. Better off with a brand new drive for $10 and buy yourself new disks. As long as you store your floppies safely and you use reliable brand disks, you'll have the least amount of issues with them.

Got one Sony MPF920 Z/IVI
looks like an exact fit -size wise
Problem is Im not sure if you need to do this step

pg 177 of user manual
To remove the operation panel:
1. Remove the four screws on the MPC2000, the four front screws and pull off the top steel metal leaving the foundation on.
2. Do not forget to remove the line connected to the CPU from the foun- dation of the operation when you are pulling the top steel metal.

Im hoping the procedure to replace floppy is just remove 4 screens underneath MPC
and drive will slide out ribbon and power cable will be long enough?

yeah you are gonna spend over 30 minutes installing that.... you can't just take off the top plate... but you will see when you open it and when you take the front plastic edge off how to get to the floppy drive.

Oh, now I remember why I moved on to MPC-2000XL from 2000 classic. Unlike 2000XL, 2000 is not accessible from bottom panel side. You have to install a new floppy drive by removing the top panel, then remove PCB board unit, etc.

I gave up on idea and decided to send it to my tech
