You have an MPC 60?

Nah I actually have the 3K. i think the 3k is off the chain. but i just wanna have option to sample stuff in 12bit and resample into the 3k.

phineus wrote:To be fair the MPC 60 I is also getting quite pricey now. People are after that 60 magic swing. The sound isn't all that gritty... not even if you were to sample in at high speeds and pitch them down.

The 60 II is cheaper on the other hand but that's probably only because it looks like a 1970s fast food cash till lol

yea, for me the look of the 60II is a deal breaker.

The SP-12 is the cheaper alternative that gives you the same workflow and identical or slightly better sound than the 1200. It also has replaceable chips so you can change the stock kit to something more contemporary.

I don't use the sequencer enough to justify getting a 1200, but as a sound design tool the SP-12 is a bargain in comparison... assuming you can find one. :smoker:

I own a 3k now and ive had a 60 and I would never get a 60 to dirty my sound up, its too expensive + it doesnt even sound dirty.

Most people reference the sound of the 60 toward DJ Premier, but his sound is all S950, so if you want a dirtier 12-bit sound i think the s950 or the emax 1 rack is the way to go.

sampling direct via mpc60 vs. sampling direct mpc3000. does the 60 even sound noticeably more dirty than 3k? not that i believe it is enough to warrant a purchase solely based on that reason. I haven't heard the 60 in person yet.

I was looking into the s950 at first... but i always hear of everyone going for S950's/S900's. i prefer something i don't hear people use often. i wouldn't mind emax. but i will probably cop a roland w30 if i find one

Well yes of course theres a slight difference, its like theres more low end, but I wouldnt use the 60 as a effect, it doesnt make a difference like SP1200 does (which I miss a lot!)

the emax 1 sounds like the SP1200 but a lil bit cleaner, so its ideal for loops etc.
The s950 is very versatile so thats a good ideal aswell (a bit on the muddy side tho).

I currently use a SP-303 before I sample it into the MPC3000, it makes it sounds very lo-fi and dirty and I like it a lot. check my signature and most of it will be 303 sampled stuff.

what is it about each machine that make ppl choose one over the other?

I got two answers for your question:
1. E-mu Sp1200 uses an analog chip to provide the warm sound called “SSM2044” (Mpc-60 doesn’t use any analog chips?)
2. The fame/kendis factor < Famous old school MTV hiphop artists has given the machine a hype by saying “I used that!”

I have the SP, 60, 3000, 950 & Emax 1 Rack.
all of these machines will get you a 12 bit sound, some more obvious than others.

Sound and swing on the SP: definitely more saturated and human than the 60.
SP has more of an automatic head nod factor.

60 is far more advanced in terms of sequencing and midi functions, but the SP is my go to for sequencing and drums.
Right now i use the SP as the sequencer and for drums, and the 3k as Stereo sampler.

Emax 1 Rack doesn't hold a candle to the SP for drums and its sluggish to navigate through the pages. its analog filters do sound real nice though and are programmable with or without an envelope, unlike the SP 12/1200.

For drums the 950 sounds really nice, but doesn't stack up to the SP either, its definitely 12 bit, but closer to the 60: Full, more clear and not as gritty.

the 60 like it has been stated is much more of a clean sound, and doesn't have any filters on it, and sub frequencies on sampled bass notes tend to click when using the note off mode even when using the Envelope. still a dope all in one machine, and you'll notice the 12 bit especially on snares if your used to the 3000. you can get great results off the 60. check out Ayatollah, he makes dope beats on a 60II.

a lot of ppl seem to like using the sp303 for sampling into other machines,, but i haven't tried it yet so i can't speak on that.

if your looking for the 12 bit sound to sample into the 3000, go for the sp12.

if your looking to get that head nod factor, the 12 and 1200 are in my opinion the best.

That's what I did. Its a lot of chasing sometimes based on so many others using it, someone well known using it, or to fit in. Just for the brag. Of couse many others really use it.

But there are so many joints out, taking the beaten path and you miss out on some real ILL peices.

Damm.. instead of talking about “12 bit sounds”, then we should talk about "filters and chips" :D

My Yamaha Dx7 is a 12 bit machine too :S

I got a SP303 a few months back and the tape in my sig is mostly resampled 303 > MPC3000, gets a decent ringy effect to it. Check it out (not trying to market my music here, just techincally discussing)

Also, that resampling thing has me another question. to those guys rocking that sp12/1200 + s900/s950 combo, how many of you like, sample stuff (ie drums) into the s900/s950 that has been already sampled on the 12/1200 to give it that sound?... and you you've saved space on the 12/1200 for other sounds.... just wondered if people do that?
