Can any of the AKAI S series rack units record while playing

Curious if any of the S-seres rack samplers are able to record a new sample while playing existing samples from the outputs at the same time. If so, which ones?

The Z4 and Z8 can certainly sample from the main outs.
But I have a feeling that is not what you mean.

On the S 900, you can re-sample (single samples) while you sequence, pretty well in real time. Edit sample to lower frequency, its meant to save space, and if you go too far it gives a message saying enough already!

Thanks guys - I should be more clear - what I mean is if you have a sequence playing using existing samples in the sampler, can you go into REC mode and record a fresh sample (say from another synth) without the sequence stopping or being muted?

Hi dshook, I just tried it on my S3000xl. It doesn't seem to work on this sampler.

I just sample one-shot or loops in the sampler, other (live) instruments I record in a daw. I've got my daw synced to my mpc. Works great this way. Also easier to edit and see what you recorded. If you want the sample in your sampler, just record (temposynced) from your daw.

Akai didn't comprehend that people meant capturing the output when they were talkig about re-sampling until after they had moved from the traditional S-Series.
The S-5000/6000 has this function but they aren't like the older S-Series samplers.

Akai really thought people were asking for a reduction in sample frequency, which is re-sampling but not what people wanted.

People wanted to be like the ASR, but Akai kept missing that point.

He is not talking about resampling. He's talking about sampling (an instrument, not the outputs) while the sequence is playing.

Yeah thanks guys - Bathmutz is right, although I would guess that whatever is required to make sampling the outputs in realtime a possibility would also allow for any other sample to be recorded while the outputs are active. Basically whether or not the thing can talk and listen at the same time. I have been doing something similar to the DAW recording workflow mentioned, but it would speed things up to be able to do it all in one box without stopping the flow. Was hoping the s3000 would be able to do this but it looks like not.

As I said the S-5000/6000 is the only S-Series that can do this.

When people were requesting this feature Akai still thought they were talking about changing the sample freq so it didn't get properly added until they finally understood they meant capturing the output like what the ASR could do.

My previous statement was totally correct.

and not only did they mean reducing the bandwidth of the sample... on the damn 2000xl... it takes 10 years for the damn resample to complete... AND it's destructive.

On the 950 you can't play the sequence while youre recording. But I think it's a pretty useless feature

its a great feature, you can free up memory by bouncing your loops and layered samples like on a four track tape. or free up your effects units by sampling with effects.

since s series samplers are soo cheap though, it might be worth getting a seccond one!

check out the s1100 though, it might be possible with one of them, they had a crazy hard disk recording mode if i remember correctly.

exactly,

sampling your sampler with your sampler.

connect the out to the ins and record what your sampler is playing(typically a phrase played by your sequencer)

Yes, or record playing an instrument live to the beat of the sequence, sampling it straight in the sampler.
