4000 CD ROM!

Hi guys

New here. I've been using my 4000 for ten years, and unfortunately after ten years I have a cd-rom issue. The disc spins but refuses to acknowledge my files. 'unknown volume' and 'blank cd' are my usual messages.

I can't afford to ship my 4000 for repair, and I don't have the confidence to exchange the cd-rom internally, so I'd like to ask - is it possible for me to use a standard external USB cd-rom, via the 4000's usb port? would that work? I'd be happy.

Or you can possibly spend $20 and 10 minutes to install another CD-Rom in the internal slot...?

i'm not confident enough to do that. you gotta know what you're doing when you're opening up.
also, i wanted to ask, do i need to update the os for the usb drives? i've tried a usb cd rom but nothing seems to be happening.
i'm on a new mac book pro. will aksys work on the new mac?

i've looked into it. apparently not a chance to get aksys working on a new mac. i have a windows 7 laptop too, and I've tried downloading xp mode, but i can't seem to get it working. how do you convert or deal with vhd files?

failing that, i might have to try and install a cd rom drive myself ffs.

Aksys is older than dirt and will not work with your Shiny new MacBook.
Great Tool, but buggy as all get out. Works best via virtual machine with WinXP.

Remember the MPC 4000 is over 13 years old.

P.S. Once you get insode you can see how easy it is, the hardest part is finding an IDE CD or DVD-ROM. (I put a DVD-Rom in mine so I can go though THOUSANDS of samples at a time.)

Will Any ccd rom work? I might give it a try tomorrow.

Im gonna put a dvd rom in my 4k now.. can i load samples in 24 bit? also does anyone have a link on how to install the drive?

Can you recommend any sites selling ide cd roms? Can't find sanything. Are all dvd roms ide?

No that is a SATA drive
As you said you need an ide one.
tbh you will have trouble finding a new one to buy as they have been superseded and not generally used now.
If you see an old computer in the trash somewhere (XP era or older) you may be able to get a working drive out of it. All you need is a screwdriver.
Otherwise, try getting a used one. (Thrift store etc.)
