Hi

was hoping for some advice.

I have been making beats for a while now on the mpc 1000 and whilst i love its portability and sequencing with the jjos I’m beginning to get more and more turned off with the sound. Just seems quite thin and bright (very digital sounding). I sample purely from vinyl but even so it can sound quite thin and lack umph a lot of the time, whereas my flatmate who makes beats on the 2000xl. seems to get a nice low mid punch out of his mpc quite naturally.

I was thinking of investing in a additional hardware sampler to add a bit more character/dirt/vibe to my samples and drums.

I came across the eps which seems to be held in high regard with gear heads, I have found one on ebay for 400 euros maxed out with scci. is this a fair price?

would this setup add a lot more. Iv heard good things about the characteristics of the eps and its filters.

what i was wondering would it make more sense to sequence on the eps and use the 1k’s pads or just sample in to the eps for some flavour and back into the mpc to sequence the rest of the beat.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

I got a mpc1000 with JJOS3 and I know what you mean by digital sounding.
Setup that works for me is S3000XL connected to mpc1000 via spdif, meaning I use the pre-amps and converters of S3000XL and do my beats in mpc1000.
The signal path goes:
Audio in:
S3000 analog in-> spdif out-> mpc1000 spdif in
Audio out:
mpc1000 spdif out-> S3000 spdif in-> analog out

This basically gives me the mpc3000 sound for my mpc1000 8)

i have a mpc 1000 and have used it with my EPS keyboard also with an ASR-10 but what i seem to use the most for the best sound imo is an s950 with the mpc 1000 controlling the s950 by the 1000 pads midi out of 1000 to midi in of s950 but the eps can definitely do what u want it to the eps is 13 bit and the 950 is 12 bit also look at the s900

playing sound thru ya rack sampler wont be the same as sampling into it and then playing it......

the eps classic is a nice bit of kit, but its not the easiest thing in the world to save things IMO and it can get tedious to work with compared to the S series samplers.

use the s900 with my 1k, now i dont even sample into my 1k. eps gathers dust :lol:

Thanks for the advice everyone

I wasn't planning on passing the sound through the eps and back out as that would be utterly pointless. Of course I would record on to the eps process the sounds then pass them back to the 1k to sequence.

yeah my comment was more aimed at the fella using the spd and passing thru his s3000xl.... no hate he might be sampling into it and doing it correctly for all i know.

need another eps? :nod:

No, I'm not sampling into it. I used to before I got my mpc. I used to sample and work with my S3000Xl and sequence it via midi with Sp-505 I had at the time.
I might sample into it at some point, but right now my current setup seems to go well with my workflow and working habits.

and by going from spdif in and using the analogue outs means you still get the coloration from the DAC. had to do some research just now :) ill eat my words

i have recently decided to run a very similar setup with either the asr10 or 3000i.
however my idea was was just to go mpc1000 spdif to asr10 and track out through its analog outputs. i would be sampling through the mpc1000.

not sure i understand the "audio in" part of your setup.
could you elaborate a bit why you need the S3000 analog in?

thanks for sharing btw. great tip for anyone reading.

Just like I use the output d/a and preamps, I use the input preamps and a/d conversion of S3000XL. Everything effects the outcome. When you get your sampler I suggest you try different setups with your gear to find out which works best for you.

thanks man. clueless about this sort of stuff.
i actually tried it today and had a mess of other problems. my asr10 does not have the digi io card (although the connectors are there :Sigh: ) and the s3000i has no connectors either.

s1100 has digital in but apparently toslink only.
so now i am wondering how to go form mpc to toslink.
started a new thread.
