Drum Kit Organization

Guys,

Just curious how you guys manage what I would imagine to be the metric f^#k ton of drums you all have. Do you guys:

A) Store every drum within its own folder (I.E 808, Kicks, Claps, Snares, Hats, etc. etc.)
or
B) Store your drum kits based on the source of the drum kit (I.E DJ Premiere Drum Kit, Havoc Drum Kit, Cardo Drum Kit, etc. etc.)

I've got a boatload of drums and while I was creating drum kits for the MP it made me curious how some of you other guys handle your drum samples.

I mostly organize by source. But realistically I don't want to go through that many drums when writing. So I have one go-to folder with about 20 kicks, 20 snares and 20 hi hats. I keep about 5 open hats and 5 crashes in there too. Maybe about 10 claps. These are the best of the best sounds in my collection. IMO, thousands of drum sounds is a waste, even though I have thousands. I'd rather use my best sounds and shape the sound with dynamics to get the impact and feel that I want, hence my go-to folder.

So if I lost all of my thousands of drums, I wouldn't care, as long as I don't lose my go-to folder.

This makes alot of sense actually, gonna give that a shot.

Yeah, always good to have a nice folder of favorites.

But to answer you're question; I think its best to keep your commercial drum kits separate and then have a folder called "my samples" or whatever and have individual 'snare' 'kick' etc. folders for stuff you sampled off records or other sources.
