MPC-Tutor wrote:There's always been a full chapter of the book dedicated to keygroup programs :)

is it thorough? my concern would be that it would be to similar to the manual. basically titling the knobs and parameters but not really going into detail of what they do or can do.

does it explain how to create an instrument out of say a sample library of c, e, and b's 1-4 octaves?
if i have a sampled a cheap toy that i really like the sound to. i know what notes I'm recording. but want more then just the one sample speed across 60 keys sound.

i have owned MPC's for some time and would not need the bible for anything other then key group. {other then having the 1000 for a couple months of out of town work. never owned any of the numark mpc's} so key group never really been an option.

thanks for the info? there are no real key group explanations or tutorials out there. and i believe this tool can be a great powerful tool.

Everything in my books is done thoroughly and in great detail, that's what sets them apart from everything else out there :smoker:

So yes, it shows you how to create a complete keygroup program with multiple keygroups made from a number of samples each spanning their own unique range - there's an entire chapter dedicated to this alone which also shows you how to overlap the samples across adjacent keygroups to utilise random timbre variations for each note (so the timbre changes each time the note is hit, even if you only have limited numbers of samples), plus incorporating all manner of program parameters, effects, LFO, filters, envelopes etc to achieve many different results.

The example in the book uses piano multisamples, and uses all the different techniques to eventually transform it into a rhodes-style instrument.

Tutor's books are top-notch, no doubt. I have his for the 1K and everything (including the stretch marks) gets a good amount of love. Have no fear, your understanding will evolve!

The Pro's:

Personally I feel MPC-Tutor has a great book. As a beginner to the MPC, I was overwhelmed by all of its features and the book helped clear ALOT of it up. From the beginning of the book he works his way through the main features by having you do exercises to internalize whatever he is teaching which is a very good way of doing things. After a day or so I knew my way around the MPC and knew how to get back and forth to areas where I otherwise would've been lost. Granted im an MPC newb, so there will obviously be things that were foreign to me that some of you pro's out there will already know, but the keygroups section of the book (which happens to be the last chapter of the book) is extremely in-depth. It walks you through the process working from the understanding that you know nothing about keygroups, what they are, how they work, etc. etc. and then teaches you from that point forward.

Having used this book i'll definitely be happily paying for the 1.8 upgrade of the book because I really like MPC-Tutors approach to teaching.

The Con's:

The biggest drawback of the book is that it doesnt really cover the sequencing aspect of the MPC. At first I thought that sequencing would be outside the scope of what this book job is, but then after giving it some thought the book works under the assessment that you now have an MPC Renaissance and dont know how to use it. So it teaches you everything from sound design, drum kit construction to keygroups. The thing is if a person doesnt know anything about the Renaissance, chances are they dont understand the sequencing aspects of it either, so I think there should definitely be some chapters dedicated the sequencing side of things. If MPC-Tutor were to do that this would truly become the MPC Renaissance bible as it'd cover pretty much everything you need to know to learn the MPC, all the way to creating your first beat.

Hopefully this review (unsolicited) clears some things up for anyone wondering about its content or quality.

Thanks for the review. The sequencing tutorials are being worked on :) In the meantime, I did put the Sequencing 101 guide in the Sampling Laid Bare book, and also have used sequencing in various tutorials within the book, but more of a way of helping explain the chopping and program concepts.

But I will try to get the more indepth sequencing tutorials out asap. This will either be a separate book, or I might end up adding them to the existing book, it would certainly be easier to maintain moving forward.

thx for that review trap.
i too have bought a couple of his books. xl and the MPC with reason. the keygroup chapters all i would need. To bad he didn't offer the book by chapters. on a side note though i sat and put in a good 2 hours to the key group section. forget sharing stolen sample libraries with the expansion builder. we should have a keygroup section. in the forum. I'm seeing so many possibilities. Wonder why there is no keygroup programs for sale on the net?

money is kinda tight right now. i better grab it before the U.S. inflation hits this year.

http://www.mpc-samples.com/section.php/ ... tisamples/

Every instrument multisample pack in the multisamples section of my site features dedicated keygroup programs in MPC Software XPM format. Been so since version 1.0 came out.

http://www.mpc-samples.com/product.php/ ... ollection/

The reason no one seems to make them is that the MPC market is too small for anyone to be bothered to go through all the hassle, not when they can just go for Kontakt and all the other ultra popular software options.

Yep, it takes a real sadist to create keygroup programs for MPCs.

Sounds about right!

I wouldn't have the patience to do all that. It's bad enough recording them and mapping them out for one MPC!
