Guys,

Quick question. I've got some drum loops that im working with (extracting the drums out), should I be normalizing every drum extracting, or should I just be extracting them as is without normalization?

Sorry if this horse has been beaten to death before

i basically see two options:

1. if you want to rebuild the drum break or just flip it but keep the original break sound then you can normalize the whole break BEFORE extracting the single hits. this way the balance between the different hits (kick, snare, cymbals etc) will stay in the original relation.

2. if you are only interested in the single hits,i.e. you try to build up a collection of snares for example, then you can normalize every hit, AFTER extracting, to get them as loud as possible. (with kicks, snares and crashes this works well. however normalized cymbals and other low-volume sounds tend to change their character in a often not nice way, sounding too aggressive. i never normalize hihats.

hint: record already as loud as possible, no normalization needed. i try to do that all the time. if i need normalization, then i have recorded too low.. so i better sample it again, louder.

i believe you know the answer to your question..

you just want fellow opinions.

if we remember we using a mastered drum... what year it was recorded..

and how it was sampled.. (in your MPC)

it would depend on what sounding drum your attempting to throw together in a mix. different kits?.. sometimes/mostimes if its clean (- white/ground/noise) and too low in gain ill throw a 5 on the gain in sample edit. undu and compare to a normalize.

this would be simple sounds. even if its kik snare or crash.

if its crunchy or complex samples FF Q pro.

FF Q Pro on most any track that needs any kind of work.
