i know this is how multitimbral mode is supposed to work but it's definitely not desirable in all cases. i'm using an Elektron Octatrack and MPC1000 with JJOS3 to sequence a few pieces of hardware. right now my Octatrack midi-out is connected to the MPC1000 which splits the midi across both A and B outs to my synths (i need two chains because not all my gear has midi-thru so some gear terminates the chain)

this is fine as long as the Octatrack is the only sequencer, but obviously I want to use the MPC as well for some things and I find that it -almost- works but doesn't quite do what I want. The problem is that JJOS will record all MIDI on channels 1-16 to the respective track 1-16.

What I would like is for the MPC to receive and pass all channels THRU the MPC but only to record the ACTIVE track, as in regular (not multi) mode. This way I could sequence my gear from either sequencer or both at the same time, and I'd also be able to trigger the sounds on my MPC via the Octatrack without recording whatever insane stream of MIDI notes the OT is sending to my other gear.

Right now I've simply condemned tracks 1-16 and am sequencing stuff on MPC with tracks 17 and up, but any time I record on one of those, tracks 1-16 fill up with garbage. I've disabled the midi-out on those tracks so there's no doubling of voices going to my synths but it's not ideal.

Turn off multi and select Soft Thru to Omni AB

hi, thanks for your reply. i should have mentioned that i tried this and it does not work.

with multi mode off the MPC will pass only whatever MIDI channel is selected as "active track receive channel". if you select "ALL" it will pass all MIDI channels thru A and B but when you activate record it will record every single midi channel at the same time to the same track which makes a ton of garbage instantly. If you select a particular MIDI channel, the MPC will only pass that one thru and ignore the rest of your channels.

perhaps this is a bug with the soft Thru when a single midi channel is selected as active track receive.

ahh i see what you mean now, that might the issue eventually

i found another thread about this and i guess it's how it is supposed to work. do you guys think it would be reasonable to request an option for active track midi record in multimode? i think this would fix the problem.

cant figure out how to edit this into my previous post, sorry.

i received this response

"Hello,

Your question was sent to programmer as a request.
It cannot reply to me about whether it is possible.

Thank you.

Murai."

no idea what it means

Means that some kind soul has send request for you thru mail or here http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/bug/report.htm
:smoker: it wasn't me :-D

As I understand you are spitting out patterns of Electron on few channels, and when you want record new track on MPC you get garbage in both modes, yeah. It only does not record MIDI if tracks are muted, you hear them being send to external synth (soft thru: omni AB) so in multi mode you have to mute tracks you do not wish to record.

I meant that I had sent the question in via the form on JJOS site. i just dont understand the response. I suppose it means the programmer is not sure if this can be done.

I didn't know that muting tracks in multitimbral mode would stop them from recording, this is helpful in the short term, as long as I remember to mute them. Thanks.

He's saying that programmer is out of reach (trippin over Tokyo :smoker: )
No worries, he's reply in time.

yeah, you can record mutes earlier where you want for instance.

hahahahah. its hard to explain in one go. obviously most people use the MPC as the main/only sequencer and this doesn't apply to them.

Here is what they understood from your request :
"Only using the sound of the channel of the active track of the MPC and not putting it THRU OUT. Others tracks are used for external devices"
Is this what you wanted to request?

No need for a fix.

What you want is:

Multitimbral mode off
OMNI AB
Active track receive channel 1 (or whatever one you want).

Now set your octatrack to spit out on the channel you want to record, and set the MPC track to the midi out you want and bingo.

The other channels will be spit across the midi channels but not recorded in the track. With some organization you can minimize the need to switch channel settings on the octotrack and mpc, but it's not bad at all.

Try it.
