gota remember that the audio heads back in the day spent days and hours compressing those drums and then we're just stealin them... but all koo cuz snatched drums from Issac H. records and many other records and sampled a kick and snare from "I get around" by 2pac...

I think the coolest thing ever is to sample drums that were themselves sampled. Preferably several times....samples of samples of samples...almost like folk music.

Layers of culture in those drums.

Cats talk about how long producers took to find a drum sound and tweak it. Boooooo! So what? But it's ok to jack a snare off of an old Kiss record which took the engineers hours and maybe a day or two to tweek after it was recorded? Regularly takin drums (or anything) from other producers is only going to hurt you in long run - I feel like I gotta learn how to get the sounds I want on my own.

Put in the time and I'll reward myself in the long run.

After you learn how to tweak, then its free game imo

Theres no difference tween chopping a record that came out yesterday and one 10-20 yrs ago, besides personal pride, no one sides other producers who pride themselves on snotty shit gives a shit, a MC wants a hot track he doesnt care bout all the rest of the nerd shit

I wouldn't jack a kick, snare and hi-hat from a bunch of hiphop records and then make a beat using just that, because I don't think it would be much fun to do, and it wouldn't be 'mine'. Come to think of it, I never reach for my hiphop 12"s when I'm sampling. But on the whole I don't give a fck where I get my samples from. I'd layer, pitch, filter and tweak 'em so much you'd never recognize them anyway.

A beat I did last week has a pitched-down and compressed tom from a BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN record for a kick, and it sounds ill. I then layered a clap from a live jazz recording with some snares and clicks for that clap-snare sound, miked up a tambourine and chopped that up, and added some more samples I don't even remember. To me, that's a lot more fun than just re-sequencing some kicks and snares from hiphop records. At the same time, if a sample from a hiphop track does sneak into that mix somewhere, who cares?

haha. okay dude. The money in my avatar is a joke cause i never have it. And i got 3 years of college so that i guess makes me "educated". This argument comes up bout once a month. When i frist started i used some sample cds. I also had a cd with bout 900 ill vinyl breaks on my pc, but i only use that when im messin around or on the 4 am beatmakin tip. If u gonna sample, find ur own shi*. nothing is more rewarding then usin a break that u took the time to sample and eq, process etc... I mean u can do that all u want, sample ur peers music, but to the real cats, primo, pete rock, marley marl, u will be looked at as a toy. the bottom line is no one will know but u at the end of the day, how could u be proud or even want to do some bullshit like that? It just seems like a newbie act. Sample cds are the same way. its good to have that shit around so u can just be prodcutive when ur lazy, but to do it all the time, and to make a livin off bein the hip hop recycler is some lame o square shit.

I really don't think anyone is saying that all they do is snatch sounds off of new sh*t. The man simply stated he took a sound or two from a recent album. He never stated that he doesn't dig for his own sounds but yet some of you people are semi-persecuting him like that's all he or anyone does. I for one sample all my drums off of old vinyl but there maybe a time where I need a certain drum sound that I can't find or tweak. A few months ago I jacked the snare off of NWA's "Express Ya Self" because I couldn't find it anywhere. Nobody gave a f*ck because the beat sounded good. Nobody said" Oh, you're wack because you got that snare off of rah rah rah" All they cared about was the beat. And if Marley Marl would get upset with me for doing that I would have to pull his card and question him on why he jacked the whole EnVogue "Hold On" bassline when LL's Boomin' System Pre-Release first came out in 90. I'd have to call Primo out for stealing the entire "Night In Tunesia" intro for "I manifest" in 89-90. I'd have to call Pete Rock out for jacking 4 bars of that sesame street tune on their EP in 91 with no alterations to it. Are they cheaters and lame too? Whatever man. I really don't think it's that serious.

You take whatever you want. It's how you flip it. Some cats even use drum loops, and put something over it. Late eightees-early nineties? Cats were using entire loops that were the same! Now the gear and the knowledge has increased to where, even when you jack something, you have the means to put that personal touch on it. That's what sampled music is all about. And you grabbing a snare from someone should not define your whole sound, so who cares? I do wish cats would just compress and eq more random snares and kicks, cus you could pretty much make anything sound like anything with a little effort. To top it off, if you use too much signature stuff from other heads, people won't really feel you, especially industry people. But, if the end result is tight, it's all good. F it, use a whole 8 bar loop, just make it INTERESTING. Just don't have the main thought in the listeners mind be like "Did you hear that track with the Hypnotize drums in it?" This is no secret or anything to be ashamed of. We been doin that since like 95, and I don't give a sh*t.
That being said, I enjoy making my own sounds more.

its a personal thing. if u cool with it then so be it, but i hear alot of these cats on this board all proud of some ghetto shit like that. But as i said at the end of the day no one is gonna know but u. so do what u gotta do. Ull never see me snatchin dr dres drums off the chronic or kanyes drums.
