I get this sometimes with my 4000. Based on the noises I'm hearing, the hard drive doesn't appear to be engaging correctly and is basically blocking the OS from loading. So far I have just switched off and on again and it fixes it. At some point I will investigate further, I suspect it's either a loose connector or potentially a bad hard drive.

loose video cable
open the unit, and re-seat the video cable

Have the same problem, occured after the unit dropped from a standing 90degree angle.. Can't find anything wrong with the LCD or contrast board.. And I cant access files from the HD through USB ... But the HD boots up and it runs the OS ok,.. :hmmm: ( I can enter record mode once the it boots up, but nothing on the LCD, I have cheeked the connection cable aswell...

Look forward to the OP findings if it's not bad cable connection ( actually very likely, if your OS boots up ok??

I had the same issue. It's not a HD issue, because MPC should start even without HD. It could be FFC cord, however I doubt it's not plugged correctly (check this if you want). I was fighting over 6 months to bring my LCD back to the life and Steve from Cambridge fixed that. A fuse (ip1) was blown on the main board this is the main protection fuse for LCD display. Also a transistor was not functioning correctly either probably because of
the surge that blew the fuse.

Damm I´ll have to take the 4k apart before I reach the main board and locate the fuse ..so just a quick follow up question before I jump in, the fuse is for power/current to the LCD?/correct? .. my LCD powers on OK.. just no info and no contrast ..just blank lit LCD .. so I just want to make sure; your LCD was lit without the fuse or completely off/ no backlit..

My LCD was exactly the same like your one. Black screen without any text, but it was powered up. You have got board over HDD when you open your MPC. The board where FFC cable goes. Check everything there.
