MPC 2000 and 2000XL screens the same?

Hey guys,

I hope this hasn't been discussed already, I found a million threads on MPC 2000xl screens but still couldn't figure out if it's actually the same screen as the MPC 2000. I've definitely seen that the third party screens you can buy on MPC Stuff work on both, but those aren't the stock screens and I want to be sure. I'm thinking of buying a cheap MPC 2000 just so I can take its screen and put it in my MPC 2000XL.

I've been through the same dilemma and situation today because I wanted to get a screen for XL for a month already.

Found a guy who has two screens (one from Xl and one from 2000 classic) and ordered them. He said that both of them will work on my XL - he says they're identical.

There is one catch in case of 2000 classic's screen - that one has shorter ribbon cable which is attached to PCB because on 2000 there's no screen tilt, so minor modifications would be necessary.

But it could be easily done if you have 2000XL's ribbon cable from your unit so you could replace it instead of 2000's to be longer.

On mpc stuff, there is some screen called "MPC 2000 (not XL) OEM Akai LCD Screen" which they say could not be used for XL, but I don't know a thing about this one. I'd like to hear something from more experience user.

If I understand you correctly, if I took a 2000's screen and put it in my 2000XL then the screen wouldn't be able to tilt all the way up without getting stuck because of the shorter ribbon cable? (But I assume the other way around -- putting a 2000XL's screen into a 2000 -- would work fine?)

Are there "standard" ribbon cables that you can find at electronics stores or on amazon or something so I could replace it, or is a proprietary Akai ribbon cable?

I put a MPC2K Xl screen in a mpcK classic and it worked perfectly

I'm in this exact situation trying to replace a broken 2000xl with a perfect screen from a 2000. how exactly do you go about extending/replacing the ribbon and power cables, i'm stumped!

any help would be much appreciated!

No need to be sorry for bumping any old threads. That's the point of forums. So bun whoever gets mad at you for it.

I'll be honest, it's going to depend on how good you are with a soldering iron. But what you do is, have to solder the ribbon cable from your old LCD to the ribbon cable of the new LCD.

So here is basically how electronics work. If point A is still connected to point B, electricity or data or sound, whatever, can still move through.

The best way would be to unsolder the cable from the new screen. Set it aside. Unsolder the cable from the original XL screen, and attach it to the new screen. Would be much easier then trying to just join them together.

Because you need a new LCD, you know how those screens get the lines.. Screwing up the ribbon cable, or heating up the board too much might make lines in your new screen. I don't know for sure, I've never tried, I don't know much about the specific of how the lines show up, a lot of others know exactly how that works.

So if your inexperienced, you risk ruining your new LCD. If you don't feel comfortable with it, the only option is to wait for an XL LCD.

Oh! MPC-STUFF and their replacement LCD that has been in the works for a while now, is actually happening. They posted up pictures of it the other day. It might be a while to get all those manufactured and tested, but sometime in the future, maybe even not far away, you'll be able to get a brand new LCD from them.
