Synthesizer recommendation

New to this forum, first post
Im looking for my first synthesizer
Highly influenced by J Dilla and Madlib
Small bedroom studio setup; MPC 2000xl, Turntable & Mixer
On a small budget, mainly wish for clean basses and pads.

The Elektron A4. Fantastic synth has everything you'd ever need and more. Don't go cheap on a synth, you will thank yourself later.

In my opinion, the key is to find one that you personally like. They all sound a little different and are different to use.

A friend of mine owns like 20-30 different synths, from small to big, including stuff like a Prophet 5, Octave The Cat, Estradin, Korg 700s, etc.
I've listened and played with most of them, but only liked a few (i'm not crazy for synths). For a long time i thought i generally dislike synthesizers, but then i heard the Korg 700s and that showed me i just am a little picky with my taste. After that i've heard the SE-1X and bought one myself.

In short: Try out some synths yourself and pick one that you like how it sounds.

On a small budget I would just get the NORD Lead rack and whatever midi conroller you can afford..

The NORD isn't soo expensive if you shop around the interwebs, has nice bass and pad sounds, an arppegiator, and is 4 part multi timbral which enables you to sequence 4 sounds from the NORD at the same time on the MPC : )

I can recommend the Novation KS4/5 if you can find a second hand one for cheap.

4 part multi timbral, great presets and effects, huge memory to save your own patches, a really nice keyboard and excellent build quality.

I own or have owned Yamaha DX7, Nord Lead 2, Roland JD800 and D50, Akai AX73, Dave Smith PolyEvolver, Moog Voyager, but my KS4 is probably my favourite and most the most versatile.

I picked mine up for £110 from a second hand shop!

i recommend the akai s-series tone program... also the sub 37... and last but not least, the guitar jack in the record input but touching the other end plus 16 levels.

Roland SH 201
inexpensive, nice sound, works well with MPC CC, extremely easy to use, versatile.

clean basses and pads are (imo) best done by digital synths. 'raw 12 bit analog' is a bit of a contradiction -bits refer to the process of a digital system- how accurately they represent an analog waveform.

i do know what you mean tho.

i think the recommendation of the roland sh-201 is good. it has modern versatility, but kinda old school and raw.

novation synths are very clean sounding (but very powerful).

This is where distortion is your friend. distort a clean signal and it sounds 'raw'. Likewise with bit-crushing.

I'd sugest the MiniBrute. I definitely liked it a lot before I bought it and I am more than just content with it now. I've included it into almost all of my beats now as a bassline synth, sometimes for lead stuff too. It's monophonic, fully analog and fun to play with - also, it is cheaper until the end of June!

if it's your first synth then take a synth with lots of knobs. a nordlead2 x is cheap, it has a nice keyboard and there are lots of patches to try out. it is also simple enough to learn subtractive synthesis .

I bought a Bass Station II yesterday. Super excided about it. Vervy nice synth. Good build, nice keys and knobs. Sound is great, knob(position) easy to navigate. Also wanted to use it as a midi keyboard. The sequencer and arp on it are very nice and are send out the midi, lots of CC knobs, latch functions is handy and it has a sustain pedal input (not so common on mono-synths I think). Great synth for the money!

Only thing i want to change is the blue leds in the pitch and mod wheels. Open up the synth and remove the wire to the leds, thats it. And maybe I'll spraypaint the bottom black also for a sleeker look.
