looking into PC recording and multi tracking

alright, i have a tascam audio interface which acts as my audio card, and it came with a copy of Cubase VST, which is a huge waste of time and money because you cant properly multitrack on it. i know Cubase SX is a lot better, but im not going to go buy another copy of friggin' Cubase when i have one that was over priced and doesnt do anything.

so now im asking you guys, what do you suggest for PC based recording and multi tracking? im looking for something that isnt that intense since im only going to be using it here to set up tracks in ideas and rough drafts before i head out to the recording studio. im looking for something with effects and filters that i can use easily.

Look into getting:

adobe audition - mutitracker AND wave editor
vegas - multitracker
pro tools free - never used it but word of mouth is it's the shit. I've only seen it.

mwalker-- im not really looking to spend that much on anything, because if i did, i think i would go out and get a M-box system with pro-tools and learn that ( i think....). other wise, i guess another 2 to 3 hundred if its worth it. i think for that much i can get Cubase SX, but im really not feeling steinberg right now man, they did me wrong with VST.

does anyone know enough of Cubase VST to drop some info on me that i might be missing?

and Lampdog, what do you mean by "Pro tools free" ? ? ?

If you were hurt by vst, you should check out nuendo, it's much friendlier than SX but essentially the same functions.

There is a free downloadable version of it, limited in some features but it's free. look up hitsquad.com and look around for the free/demo/shareware/freeware section of the site and you can find it in the audio software/multitracker section.

hey lamp. tht free pro tools pnly works with 98, unless your talking about some other version they brought out. the 98 version has only eight tracks, vut hey i guess you can bounce cant you. but i personbally wouldnt recommend it on the shere basis tht you have to be running 98se as a platform. nuendo is a good choice, loads of features, more than you will ever end up using.

adobe audition is quite good.

but there is one called magix saplitude

and mwalker- is se really worth it? i mean with VST i could not edit or add effects to the tracks. i couldnt even download plug ins and ish.

also how much does nuendo run for? i havent seen it before?

I used to use vst before using Cubase SX, and I was able to multitrack fine... have you read the manual?....sounds like theres something your missing, or the version you have is some kinda cut down version

cubase se will do everything you want. i own cubase sl, i have been using cubase for more than 12 years and i only use about 60% (anyone using cubase sx and not doing surround sound is wasting there money) of the program. if you want to track some tracks and add vst effect you cant go wrong with cubase se. it is only $99.
