JJOSXL - Round Robin (Cycle) Sequencing

Hey all, just got my MPC1000 upgraded to JJOS2XL, and I was excited to start using the Cycle feature. I got it working just fine, but then when I started to record sequences with a pad set to Cycle-Random, I noticed that it only records the "output" of the cycle – that is, the pads being triggered by the cycle pad.

So say I have a kick on every beat in a 1 bar pattern; instead of having endless randomization on playback, I just have the four kicks the cycle-random pad happened to trigger when I recorded the pattern.

Are there any ways around this? Something that doesn't involve routing MIDI out of the MPC and back into itself, ideally. Thanks!

unfortunately, this is the limitation of JJOSXL. using an external MIDI filter/device is the only way I've achieved randomization during playback.

Got it, thanks for the answer. I can figure out how to set it up that way, just seems a little too fiddly for a live set where I have other things going on.

never tried this, so maybe someone else can confirm/deny: you may be able to utilize the pattern-to-pad function to trigger random samples.

Honestly I think the feature primarily exists for live beatmaking. You shouldn't really worry about randomisation through the entire song though. No one's going to notice if the kick sequence repeats after a couple of bars. Most songs with sequenced drums don't have problems with repeating the same kick sample. It's just there to provide a foundation for the rest of the track, after all.

yeah imo the pattern to pad feature is not a solution to OPs problem. I think that the cycle feature records that pad only and you leave it set to random so its gonna play that pad only with that pad setting. If you think about it it makes perfect sense as it does not interfere with other pads that might have different settings program wise or pad feature wise.
