Would you find Naming from hardware useful?

Yes that's a pretty cool idea! Hellfire!
I would add a numerical counter son the names could be like kick_01 kick_02 etc..
I prefer to layer shit in different tracks than in a single pad.

i like HF's contribution
but how about access to the usb for a qwerty keyboard to plug in & have full control...
or even copy paste track names from each seq.. cld be in RAM ready for seq related naming & a possible symbol that will follow to allow the difference to be assigned?

+1 for me too. After many years of working on the 2kxl, I was quick as hell at naming tracks and sequences using the drum pads. I'd like to see that come back.

I think a lot of folks are assuming some of us that want to name from hardware want to type from the hardware. I sure as hell don't, BUT I do want to be able to initiate a name change to tracks, seq, etc... from the hardware (ie put the field in edit mode so I can type) I made a video for both Mac and PC a while ago showing how to accomplish this with some free tools/utilities, and minor edits to scripts and made the files available for anyone to use. (I won't bump it again..it's around here somewhere). For the way I work even just having hotkeys/shortcut keys built into the Ren software to highlights the necessary field so I can start typing right away wold be great. The little hack I put together is significantly faster than reaching for the mouse to do renames for me, but I'd rather the capability be native to the MPC software so it is more seamless and consistent.

EDIT:
I had just replied to the OP right after voting and just went back and read the rest of the thread.. HF's idea of preset names is good, but I'd still like the capability to put any filed into edit mode from the hardware or via hotkeys so I could type from my keyboard in addition to the preset ideas because I do not always use generic names like 'kick' 'snare', etc....for my track names. I think hoykeys would be faster though because you would not have to navigate to any field, press any window buttons, or use arrow keys to scroll and find the appropriate name to use. The hotkey will always make a specific field editable and you can type right away (ie on a mac for example, if there was the hotkey like CMD-S, it would automatically put the sequence name field of the currently selected seq (As shown on the hardware) in edit mode, you type and hit enter and done, or CMD-t would place the track name field of the current/selected track (As shown on the hardware) in edit mode, you type, hit enter, done...) NO navigating to the field, pressing window buttons or scrolling to additional values to make more selections.

Just edit mode, type, done, next.... of course, if you do not work with your keyboard in front of or near your ren then this obviously would not be optimal for you, which is why I'd like to see this IN ADDITION to HF's preset idea so we have options to suit how we individually work...

DJ Hellfire wrote:What WOULD be dope is if there was a way to name from the hardware using PRESET names you could choose from. For example, I could press Window on the track field of the hardware, then press a Name f key for example, choose from a list of names like Hat, Kick, Snare, Strings, Bass, Guitar, Piano, Drums, Melody, Sample, etc. All you would have to do is pick one instead of typing it in. THAT would be dope! :smoker:

Yess! The problem is not that we need to use the keyboard. The problem is that we have to use the mouse! An option to highlight the name would be so much helpful!

I've wished that this was a feature on my 1K before already. Just be a nice "icing" feature but one that would be so, so sweet.

I voted yes.

I run my MPC Studio on an 8" Windows 8.1 Tablet when I'm travelling, so try to do as much as I can on Hardware as I can hardly read the display on the tiny tablet!
