Has it ever been confirmed that Dilla did program his beats at double the bpm?

As he used a SP1200 in the early days I would say that's a definite yes (all SP1200 owners did/do from what I've read). If he continued to do so when he switched to the 3000 I couldn't say but would be reasonable to infer he did.

Scratch what I said. I misread - or just didn't read properly at all - and thought you were talking about sampling your chops pitched up and de-tuning in the box.

Only way you can get an answer is by trawling through all videos of him in the lab (not many about) and see if the metronome is double time or not.

Ah, alright mate, or maybe speak to someone who would know if no videos exist. Well I asked because if he didn't use double the bpm, I don't think it will ever be necessary to have more than 96 ppq.

It would be very interesting to know.

Yeah mate I always remembered that lyric, but he could have been referring to the actual bpm of the song and not the double time bpm of the sequence.

Doesn't matter if you program in double BPM or not, the song will be 92BPM anyway. Only difference is that the MPC's sequencer is set to 184BPM instead of 92.

Yes but the resolution will be double meaning there will be more places to put events which can greatly effect a groove and rhythm.

Dilla's known for his sick grooves and awesome rhythms so if you can create grooves of that quality with the 3000's standard resolution (which is 96 ppq I believe) then i'll be happy, because I won't have to start programming in double bpm's.

Don't have to explain that to me; I program in double timing as well. Doubling the timing doubles the resolution like you said, but not the initial tempo of the song. I never tell the MC that the beat is 184bbpm, the actual beat is still 92bpm.
