~MPC2000XL: Complete Newbie, bought used, how to begin~

I recently just bought the MPC 2000XL on Amazon (used), and it came with only a power cable.
I am absolutely oblivious to how this drum machine works, I felt so inspired to start hip-hop instrumentals, but this problem put a big stop on my journey...

How do I start making beats? I can figure out the mechanics of all the buttons but how do I actually begin starting making beats. I have many ideas and inspirations, I just need to know how I can start making music.

Do I need to go and buy separately some cables that will connect the mpc2000XL to my PC?

as in that they push down?

for not knowing anything - that is a lot of money to spend.

your best bet is to forget the computer for the first few months - just plug headphones into. then hook a sound source like a cd player or yer phone into the inputs and read the manual on how to sample something.
then trim those samples (in the manual) and build a program (manual), then hit the pads, and you should hear some sound from yer headphones.
then use the sequencer to record a beat.

you've got a long way to go - do you even have storage media for it? if not you will lose all your work when you turn it off.

Yeah, I used to tell a lot of people to RTFM. i must be getting soft in my old age. But we don't have too many newbs these days. So it's less of a hassle than it used to be.

Be sure to check out the tutorial that MPC-Tutor recommended. He writes them so they're very easy to follow along. It's more fun than using the manual. But the manual is still essential.

Yo hey guys, I just bought an MPC and I was wondering where all these sounds were?

I saw these videos with Pete Rock and he uses an MPC 2000XL in the videos and so I went on craigslist a few and bought the MPC 2000XL for $2500 which I thought was cheap. The guy said that Pete Rock used this and I thought dope but when I went home and turned it on, I hit the pads and no sounds came out. I called the guy who sold me the MPC and told him I wanted my money back because there were no sounds inside the MPC and he told me I need to "Go on YouTube and search for breaks and sample them like a Chinese Buffet" and hung up the phone on me.

I'm willing to paypal anyone who can help me work though this, thanks.

Did you turn around your precious MPC and shake that thing a few times? Maybe they stuck between all the cables and parts in the inside! Happened to me a few times. Now I got the sounds, they're finally free like fishes in the sea!
