Finally!

It has happened to me, right in front of my face and I just...ok I FINALLY got a f*cking MPC!!!!!!!

This seems like such a nice forum of helpful fellows, I thought you guys could forgive this post and celebrate wit me:)

Got an older 2000xl w the 8 outs and 18mb ram, smpte, digital outs..it's cool as hell:)

you need another 16mb ram chip in there!

I really do. Wonder if that "flash rom" is still available, sounds convenient.

Aaaand the S950 arrived today, so I'm in akai heaven right now.

It used to cost nearly as much as the MPC itself, I don't think many people bothered with it. Thankfully the one thing 'Numark-Akai' got right compared to Akai Japan was to give up with the whole 'options' thing and instead actually ship the MPCs out of the factory with things like effects, extra outs, flash RAM etc already built into the box.

At the time the 2000 was being designed, it seemed like the most cost effective way to be able to buy an MPC at $1999 for a unit with no expansions. But buying all those expansions at the time ended up bringing the total cost close to $5000, which was what the MPC3000 cost when it was released. I thought it was a good idea at the time. I wouldn't be able to afford an MPC at $5000. But I still wish the flash rom wasn't a separate option. It's still more expensive than the MPC itself. I'm convinced that I'll still find a deal on one someday.

yeah.. ram for the 2000 is cheap as dirt today but was extremely expensive back in those days...

some people here have that flash rom expansion. i think some people remade them and sold them on ebay.. no?

Back then, 32mb was $100. That was around '97-'98 when I upgraded a friend's MPC2000. It was such a gamechanger for us to have that much RAM, let alone being able to sequence all our MIDI hardware at the time. When I look at the specs on all the more modern samplers, it makes me realize how much of a relic the 2000 is. But it does what I need to do now, just as it did back then. It's strange how it ended up being the cheapest 2nd hand model around. I wonder how the new displays will affect the going price.

I've only had it a few days, but I'm amazed how simple and straightforward it is. It does like the 5 things I want to do, and nothing more. It's brilliant and musical. It's such a relief from using a computer to me. You guys that own one are lucky! This is how making beats should be!

Yeah, the RAM is cheaper these days. Max it out.

The used market for the 2k/2kxl has been a lot easier on the pocket in recent years. About 10 years ago, a used 2kxl would go for around $800 or so, depending on what options came with it. Back when the 2k and the XL were new, $2000 was a bit too steep for me, even though I ended up building a PC around that time which ended up costing the same amount of money. At least the MPC still retains some value. If I still had that computer, I couldnt even give it away. A 7gb hard drive cost me $300 in 1998 and it failed shortly after the warranty expired.
