I have a mostly-hardware studio where Logic X is used as a recorder and efx/mixing tool
I have my MPC1000 slaved to Logics midi, that way, MPC starts and stops when Logic does so. I have a Logic template with 16 vsts that can get sequenced and played by the MPC and a midi keyboard. I don't use vsts that much, mainly Reaktor and Arturias Prophet

Besides the software setup, I also have several hardware synths. I have them slaved to the MPC, so I can record midi sequences on the MPC and later on, record them into Logic as midi and as audio. So I have my MPC midiA out going into my Korg MS2000 midi in, my MS2000 midi thru going into a midi thru box, where I go into my Korg MS20 mini, my eurorack system and my Nord Modular.

My workflow is usually start building some sequences with the eurorack system, which gets midi triggers from the MPC, which at the same time is getting its tempo/start/stop from Logic. After that, I might record the modular to audio or just leave it going on while I add some drums from the MPC1000 or from Drum designer in Logic (with the proper efx it can sound wicked). The rest is usually building up from there, writting midi sequences on MPC that will control the synths, and finally recording everything to audio while live tweaking everything

At the moment, my main concern is trying to make up my head into creating a template on the MPC so I don't spend the first 30 minutes arranging everything every single time I want to do a song. I do have a Logic Template which works very nice (16 audio tracks, 16 vsts tracks, 16 external midi tracks, 16 aux tracks, all the midi setup properly and all the audio routings setup properly)

My setup is simpler these days. Less gear, less clutter, but still mainly what I need.

MPC2000 - i do most of my sampling/sequencing with it.

SP-404SX - I run the MPC through it for effects, resampling back into the MPC, and I also have it slaved to the MPC. But I also like working with it on it's own, loaded with rechargeable batteries.

x0xb0x - I write all my patterns internally and have it slaved to the MPC.

iPad Mini 2 - All my favorite synths reside here. Sometimes I use it on it's own with all my apps running through Cubasis. Other times, I have it synced to my Mac Mini with Music IO. I don't have any audio or MIDI interfaces for it yet. But the Music IO app takes care of that when I use my DAW to sync and record.

Mac Mini - I'm running Reason 7 with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and a Novation Launchkey 25. I bought the Launchkey 25 specifically for the iPad. But I also use it with Reason. I'm using a Korg PadKontrol as a MIDI interface. The MPC, SP, and x0x are all synced up to Reason through the PadKontrol. Having to record only 2 tracks at a time with the Scarlett isn't my ideal solution. So I'm thinking about buying a Zoom R16 which I can use to record 8 tracks at once into Reason or to use on it's own, since it's battery powered. It's much cheaper than an 8 input audio interface. So it seems like the best solution for me, especially for portable use.

I'll sample drums in the 505 and re-sample to the 606, lay a sample and play with it between the two machines.
once I got something "cool" I’ll fire up my workstation and redo the beat in Linux. I use the SP-606 as a controller for the "Hydrogen Drum Machine". I'll use Zynaddsubfx for a synth then sequence and track in Ardour4.

doesn’t seem to be the case release wise.

Ubuntu versions come out every 6 months, the 4th and 10th month of every year. that’s why its Ubuntu xx.04/xx.10

they will support this version the next 4 month, after which time I with have already used the package manger to upgrade to 15.10.

16.04 will be an L.T.S. release (Long Time Support) and will be supported for 5 years. I’ll stay on that for awhile (I was on 12.04 for 3 years) unless I see some functionality that I need that I could only get in a newer release.

UbuntuStudio has been in lockstep with these release dates. they have however broken with Ubuntu on the widow manager of choice, regular Ubuntu created Unity (to replace Gnome) which had almost everyone in the Linux world upset (including the UbuntuStudio community). ubuntuSudio now uses X.F.C.E.


it's what I would use if I was on an old laptop. but I’m on a 24 gig, 16-core workstation so I use unity on Ubuntu Studio.

so nah. ubuntstudio is still around and kicking.
