I just got my mpc1000 a little over a month ago. Within the first few weeks of owning it I experienced one or two situation where the audio would just drop out and stop working completely (both stereo out and headphones). If I just rebooted it it worked fine again. Earlier this week something similar happened but instead of a complete drop out, for a loaded program the pads all of a sudden started playing really loud static- again both headphones and stereo out. It happened again just a few minutes ago, but before I rebooted it the normal audio did start coming back with a little bit of crackling, and then it went completely out like the original issue.

Rebooting it made it fine again, but it sounds like I might be having to replace something soon (hopefully costing less than just buying a new one...), so just wanted to get an idea if anyone knows what this problem points to, and how easy that would be to fix on my own (i.e. part availability, etc).

If you have ram in there, open it, take out ram, put it back into the slot, make sure it's seated firmly.

I have been having the same exact problem. Got my MPC 1000 used sometime in 2013 and a few months later the same problem started occurring. It's just nice to see I'm not the only one. Did replacing the RAM help? What's the solution for this? It's dropped out a few times during gigs and it really sucks to have to reboot during a show. Thanks!

PS I'm running the original OS

Bad news, I just tried playing the factory sequences without any RAM loaded and the audio is still dropping out randomly. Everything else on the display is normal. Counter still reads as is the sequence is still playing but the sound just stops.

Just continuing this thread for anyone that may have similar problems:

So I updated to the latest Akai OS and it seemed to fix the problem for a long time until yesterday and today when it started crashing the same way again. I'm going to try and reload the OS again and hopefully it will stop messing up long enough for me to play a few shows this week.

If I keep having the same issue I will load the latest free jjos and go from there.

OK So! I think I may have found a solution to this (or maybe just in my case) specific Issue. So these RAMs have likely been in these machines for up to 20 years right? They located conveniently on the rear with a little trap door covering them. Chances are they are probably gonna get a bit dirty/dusty overtime!

Sooo...
I took my RAM out of the slot by peeling out (ever so slightly) the plastic arms on the side. Then I noticed 3 TINY specs of dust on both the RAM module and the slot pins. I removed them delicately with a dust brush. Then i noticed that the rectangular pins on the RAM module looked a bit dirty too, or possibly oxidised. In comes trusty Deoxit D5! I used a tiny spray on top of a cotton bud and lightly brushed each pin down the length of each pin (do it lightly and carefully and also be aware of getting cotton hairs on the pins). I then flipped the module over and repeated on the back side. Let the pins dry for a minute or two.

Then i repeated the deoxit process by very lightly dabbing the pins on the slot inside the MPC. Again be careful not to get any hairs in there! You see those 2 little copper dots (circles) on the base of the slot that match with the ones on the corners of the RAM module? Give those a little dab too. Why not right?

Now you're ready to pop the Module back into the slot. There are plenty of YT tutorials for that!

Im currently running the MPC on loop for an hour to see if any dropouts or distortion occurs. In my specific case I was getting drop outs and distortion/static of mostly individual samples and occasionally a full audio dropout. The tell tale sign i thought it could be the RAM was that the sequence didn't buffer of lag, it kept going strong whilst (presumably) the RAM struggled to load the samples in time.

Will update shortly on whether I have fixed the issue. Could be jumping the gun here, but every time i tried just wiggling the RAM, after booting it back up the dropouts would occur pretty quickly. I've had the loop running for about 15 minutes in my headphones as I finish this post, so i'm feeling pretty good about this.

Trouble shooting my MPC 1000 whilst preparing for my live sets is a bit of a thrill. I wouldn't recommend it to the light hearted, but if your in love with these machines as much as i am, you'll find a work around! As good as JJ is at making operating systems, there will sadly always be bugs. But when you can circumvent them through sheer persistence, you'll be slightly more in love with the MPC 1000. Or not XD

fyi...
If you can't save a set your working on, say your MPC gets stuck/freezes in the save menu, it's very likely that your Disk drive, presuming you have one like I do, has dislodged from the pins in its little enclosure on the front of the unit! Give it a little push back in. I'd probably cut your losses with the current set though. Turn it off before you do anything! ALWAYS!!

Cheers,
Zeb.

What disk drive do you mean? or is it the card slot you are talking about?

you can install an hdd or even an ssd nowadays (with adapter, check the sticky posts). the harddisk bay is under the front cover on the left of the compact flash bay. i for one have both a 128 gb ssd and a compact flash to sd adapter with a 128 gb sd card, 256 gb full on storage with the advantage that i can easily take out the sd for swapping files with computer or other devices
