Akai Remix 88(Akai s20) File type help

Hi i got my Remix88 today which is basically a s20.I prepared a bunch of samples on my computer days before it arrived.I figured since the MPC 2000 used Wav. i figured the s20 would also so i saved most of the samples as Wav.Then i transfered some of them onto Fujifilm MF2HD and Memorex Cool floppy disks using a IBM floppy drive.A disk came with the remix88,i put it in and everything worked.But when i try to put in my floppies i just get the letters "NoFo".I tried putting the disk that came with the remix in my floppy drive so i could see what file type the disk was using but my laptop does not recognize the disk.Ive tried looking all over the internet and i couldn't find anything about the file type the S20 uses

So what file types does the Akai S20 and Akai Remix88 use?

I'm not sure. But maybe it just reads SND files. Give it a try.

From the remix 16 manual....
"Possible to load sample data from the sound library disks for almost all Akai S series samplers (s900/s1000/s1100/s2800/s3000/s3200/s2000/s01)."

also, the remix and associated phrase samplers (S01/S20) record samples at low sample rates (32khz / 16khz /8khz) so may or may not be able to load CD quality samples (44.1khz).
I can't answer that question right now though it may be in the manual. I'll take a quick look.
What I can say is that it definitely won't load wave files.

No i got it used from Japanese Ebay seller so i didn't get the manual

btw. Sampling from the inputs is far more satisfying than loading files from your computer.

After a quick read of the S20 manual, it looks like loading a file other (edit- I meant higher ) than 32khz may result in the pitch of the sound being altered.

"NoFo" sounds like the disk isn't formatted correctly. it has been a long time since i've used my s20, but i don't think you can just swap a disk from yer computer to the sampler that easy. i remember using midi sample dump which was a complete waste of time.

Yeah that's most likely the case.I just decided to use RCA cables with adapter from my laptop to the remix88 and recording my tracks with a 4 track recorder until i find out how to format a disk.

i'm sure you format a disk in the machine. whether that will work with your computer - i doubt it.

Formatting is a POP
Just select format on the matrix on the front of the machine.
options come up like disk type (DD or HD) and confirmation. Just keep pressing record to confirm each step until the disk starts formatting.

One thing I would recommend, The machine takes either a 4mb or 16mb simm.
If you can get hold of a 4mb simm to install, that turns out to be the better option.
If you have the 16mb installed (giving you 17mb ) - sounds attractive but, you will find yourself putting too many samples/using too much memory, leading to a royal PITA trying to save the whole memory across multiple disks. This is only my opinion but believe me I have been through this.

Wow i didn't even notice that it had a format option...i'm getting the letters "FORK" or "FORH" after pressing record 3 times then after awhile it goes blank.I'm gonna keep playing around with it until it works

i can attest to this - i never used more than about 4mb just so i wouldn't have to load so many disks.
ha my first sets ,when i was a kid and the s20 was the only thing i used, had like 5 minute pauses between songs while i loaded 3-4 floppies per track

Ha! Takes me back.
Actually I am still using plenty equipment that only uses floppies.
Wouldn't dream of playing out with it these days though

@Ratty - I think 4mb gives you up to about a minute or more sampling time depending on which rate you use.
This really should be tons of time to use in a track if you have just a little skill / experience.

Yeah that sounds about right.
Once it goes blank the disk should be formatted and ready to use.

Has anyone tried the Gotek floppy emulator with the s20 yet?
