and to be specific I guess I don't care where the screen is as much as I'd like the knobs to be left of the pads ya dig, but anytime a discussion is filled with beat machine pics I've enjoyed it.... one

Bingo!

The layout favours right handed users for this very reason. Your least dexterous hand is fine for triggering pads while editing, but the main interface requires your favoured hand on the screen. If you're ambidextrous you're laughing!

And I'd give my right hand to be ambidextrous....

Sounds like the beginning of a story to me...

Erm....is that Pete Goodliffe?

I think that's the other Pete; the one who was informing us about the Windows Embedded thingy.

Here's the thing...

On their Facebook page they keep replying to folks asking about "standalone" with "this is just the beginning". If they don't release a standalone, they deserve whatever backlash they get, because their responses would have been incredibly misleading. They've certainly misled before (new 5000 OS, 3000 circuitry in the Ren...). But that would be an all time low for misleading marketing.

"this is just the beginning" is the only thing that's keeping my hopes up. I'm thinking that since the touch screen is so new they are starting off small to see how it will go and then build a standalone unit. And $799 is a bit high. I thought $599 would be the max.

$799 and £499 in the UK is definitely high, but that's always the way these things go - price them high and get the hardcore fans and bandwagon jumpers to purchase, beta test for free, then drop the price to something slightly more reasonable.

The thing is, these controllers cost virtually nothing to actually manufacture, in this respect profit margins are HUGE compared to producing standalone hardware -- there is nothing premium about the materials or processes that go into this stuff (goes for most manufacturers these days).

I know there are other costs like R&D, marketing, distribution, third party licensing, etc, and the mpc software licence allegedly makes up a proportion of the final retail price, but there's definitely plenty to play with on the retail pricing of these things (not necessarily for the dealers though).

Saw this comment on MPC Tutor, and I agree 1000%….

"The reason I use my MPC Ren (as opposed to a Maschine Studio or even simply making beats within a DAW such as Logic or FL Studio) is because of the classic MPC workflow that I am accustomed to. Now it looks as if they are changing up that workflow considerably. I am a professional so I don't have time to adapt to a whole new system. So while the MPC Touch unit looks amazing, the pads look great, and the screen looks futuristic and really cool, I really don't see a need for it for someone like me.

Now if a Ren 2 comes along and I feel like it's an upgrade and improvement on my current workflow, I will gladly pay up to 2k for something like that. At this point the MPC Touch feels more like a random lateral move that may entice first-time buyers, but there's not much in it for current Ren and Studio users."

It's all a cock-measuring contest between NI and Akai, and it's really played out. I really wish NI never made Maschine because Akai wouldn't be side-tracked into the regurgitation of all this crap.

If you mean me (Pete Brown), nope. Not me. I still work at Microsoft.
