As it says on the site

"OS128SP is OS with a function almost equivalent to OS-XL."

Since I moved up from my old MPC2kxl.. I've always used OS128xl... as I have the large screen. However, lots of people swear by OS-XL.

I've loaded it up a couple of times, but haven't persisted as using only 1/2 the screen seems a waste. I'm very interested to see the difference..

My impression from all the reading, is that OS128xl/OS3 is more oriented for sequencing, whereas OS-XL is more about loop sampling... Also very interested in CC control of filter cutoffs... OS128sp.. maybe better for live sets.

This is exciting stuff...

MPC-Tutor wrote:Great news, but confusing naming as usual! The large screen version of OS-XL (or OS2XL) is not 128XL, it's 128SP, while 128XL is actually the large screen version of OS3. :hmmm:

Agreed.
OS128xl was out before OS3 - so I'm guessing this was only recently added to the release plan..
Swapping the names around could be even more confusing for existing 128xl users. Maybe there was never even meant to be an OS3..

OS3 is a particular case. In the past they were talks to create it or not, to make it free or not. Finally it has been released as a demonstration version of 128XL for small screens. For me OS3 is an unfinished OS, not very user friendly. I'd have preferred another paying version with a real support but anyway.
Now with this 128SP if we can enjoy OS2XL even better it's a very good news. All I hope is that by saying "almost equivalent" they won't remove important features and kill the workflow.

Taken from JJ's homepage :
The bottom of the screen of OS-XL was only extended.
A part of modes are standard screens
There is no VIEW mode of GRID.
The "Input" field of a RECORD does not have selection of CD.

This function will be removed : http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/os2xl/grid_drum4v3.htm
and there will be a mix between big and small screens.

Not sure how OS3 is unsupported.. It is only free for people who have paid for OS-XL already (talking about actual OS3 - not JJOS Free 3.xy). Only one function that I am aware of in 128xl exists that doesn't exist in OS3 and that is being able to assign the Pad mixer to cc's (as opposed to the track mixer)

This arrangement is effectively the same as having OS128SP free for users who have OS128XL. In other words, both flavours of OS are available for users who have paid for a license.. Bugs in OS3 are fixed simultaneously with bugs in OS128XL..

As for being incomplete, that's really a matter of subjective opinion. I am going to give OS128SP a go, but there are a number of features that I use in 128XL that aren't in 128SP.. A big example for me is track edit mode (losing that could kill my workflow)

I can see it is possible that I may use the different OS's for different purposes, but I'd hardly say either is incomplete... unless they both are (until all functions are merged, which is impossible due to the hardware limitations)..

At a time there was only 1 paid JJOS and many people worked on it everyday making progress very fast. Now you got few OS' to choose... three versions for small screen that are 100% done, finished. I don't think that many people are involved in OS3/128 develop as before.

Since OS3 was out there have been only a few updates, no major workflow improvement. Indeed, OS3 has good features like the track edit you mentioned. Personally, coming from OS2XL I think OS3 TRIM mode is a nightmare. The workflow is not good with a small screen. You got the big screen. If 128SP is good you'll have the best setup to fully enjoy JJ OS :)

Yeah JJ OS is almost dead. First because the OS is full (almost nothing can be added). There's some space for new features in OS3 and 128XL but have you seen a major addition recently? Secondly, because 1K and 2K5 aren't sold anymore and because of the competition with new MPCs.

Nevertheless, I think it's a good move to make a big screen version of OS2XL. We could have the best of both worlds :)

I'd say it's a different workflow not an incomplete one.
I deal mainly with sequencing and single hit samples and occasional instrument samples and rarely loop. .. OS-XL always looked more oriented around loop sampling. Hence why the trim function on OS-128XL doesn't bother me.
