Make a new folder for each beat you are saving. Save in to that folder and you will not have this problem.

And to load the beat you need to load both these files

Thanks man each beat in a new folder to right?

Hold up hold up. I really want to understand how to make this work for me because I lost an entire sequence the other day. Simply turned my mpc on and one of my sequences was missing. Prior to shutting it off I saved .aps and .all into the root folder. Turned it on and a sequence was gone (sequence #1 if that means anything?.

I've spent time reading through posts in this forum and understand that many people advise to save each individual beat in its own folder with it's own .aps and .all.
Question 1. By 'Beat', are we referring to a sequence?
Question 2. I plan to use my mpc200xl in a live setting, where each of my sequences contains samples which I bring in and out via the 8 outs. Each sequence is a 'song' which I'll play for 5-7 minutes, then I'll I fade out and play the next sequence etc etc. At the moment, All my content is saved in the root folder within .aps and .all So when I turn it on it automatically it loads up the two and I'm ready to go with all my sequences ready to play.

If every sequence/beat of mine will be saved in it's own folder with corresponding .aps and .all, in a live setting what is the best way for me to move from sequence to sequence? Because would I not have to go to the load screen every time > load up folder containing the next .aps and .all files and then play my new sequence?

Lastly, I assume that the reason I lost one of my sequences is because when I last saved all sequences and songs (overwrite) something must have gone wrong? I can't imagine that somehow I managed to delete an entire sequence and then saved over the previous .all?

What if after every session I simply saved .all sequences and songs under a new name, and then that way if I load up the most recent version and find that that something is missing, I can always load up the previous version?

Ideally I would like to be able to work like this:
(setup: mpc2000xl, 8 outs, non hot-swapable cf card reader, 1gb SanDisk cf card, 12 channel yamaha mixer)

A central .APS that sits in root folder which contains programs and samples for all my sequences (my entire live performance)

Then every time I finish creating a new sequence, or make ay adjustments to my sequence or mixer, instead of overwriting the original .ALL file, I simply create another (1.all, 2.all, 3.all etc etc). This way I have backups of all my previous sequences and songs.

When it's time for me to perform I simply load up .APS and my most recent .All and I'm ready to perform.

I assume that .ALL files take up very little space as opposed to .APS. The reason I don't understand creating individual .APS for every sequence is because it would take up a ton of space, right? Also having every sequence saved in an individual folder would make a my live situation complicated, correct?

any help would be genuinely so appreciated as I am meant to play a live set on NYE and since I have lost one of my sequences I am afraid to continue writing material until I find a way to 'backup' my work.

Really hope someone can help me out, and I'm sorry for the long post!

Don't save a project into ROOT folder. Separate folder for each project.
I use my ROOT folder for misc stuff, library, templates, etc. Use it for whatever you want, just know the risks. IMO it's dangerous to mix serious works in ROOT together. Use folder/partition separation.

PROJECT meaning one complete song, all it's associated samples, APS, ALL, SND, WAV, SEQ, MID's.

Losing stuff in ROOT folder, well, you'll need to uniquely names things. APS is a table of contents. If you change anything associated with it, then that APS will not be able to find it. It ONLY remembers the last saved names.

In a live setting you'll need to figure out your way of doing things together with the machine's capabilities. Just because you WANT to, doesn't mean it will be easy or possible.

Thank you so much for the quick reply lampdog.

So I'll start making individual folders for every project. In regards to .APS for each program, do you purge all sounds not used in your sequence in order to save space? If so, if every project .APS only contains sounds used in the sequence, do you keep a 'master' .APS somewhere which contains your entire bank of samples?

When you want to start a new project: create new folder > which .APS file do you open in order to access your entire sound library (assuming that all previous projects contain an .APS which only has the sounds used in that project)????

would you suggest to have a master .APS containing all sounds, load that up when creating a new project > once finished with the project save the .APS under a new name? then purge all unused sounds? > then make sure that all corresponding files are saved in the same folder?

Just trying to figure out the process which I'll need to follow.
