What Headphone do you use to Mix?

i have the sony mdr-v6 ones.. they are okay but i hate coil cables and the foams are shit quality... honestly, when i splurge on better ones i have had my eye on a pair of beyer dynamics but they are like 300 bucks before taxes at the local recording studio equipment shop (place where they sell only recording gear pretty much)

I've always loved listening to music with headphones, because it's so immersive and you don't have to be concerned with weird room issues you get with monitors. My all time favourites are the Sennheiser HD650 which I used for years and are reasonably priced, but I bought the HD800's this year and they're amazing. It's like going from VHS to Blu-ray.

Sure, a lot of people have them, you see them get a lot of use by TV sports commentators etc as they're durable, indestructible etc...in other words, they're trusted by a lot of people.
Had a pair of HD 25 SP for almost 15 years; took them this long for the left driver to blow...i've travelled with them around the world, playing so many DJ gigs etc.
It's just their sound that doesn't lend itself to any critical mixing or mastering work due to the very coloured nature; I can listen to music on them but I dislike the sound as I've gotten used to natural response, and these days, in terms of critical work, I'm staying away from anything that colors the sound.

you know... someone should do a (non-subjective) test for headphones.. mic-ing them maybe with white noise... finding out exactly which ones are actually the flattest. they could use the neuman head mic hahaha

Interesting. Getting LCD-X in 2016 myself.

And I still own the Ultrasone PRO750, which my first headphone set for mixing. I use it now for drumming.

I've been using SONY V6 for years (more than 7 years). The original earpad came out shortly after I bought, and I replaced the garbage earpads with this Beyerdynamic DT250/DT280 Replacement Earpads;

I can recommend the earpads. I've been using them for more than 7 years, and still in great shape. Unlike SONY's earpads, Beyerdynamic's earpads won't become flaky.

Really? Those earpads are $25 for each pair, but Sony MDR V6 cans would cost more than $80.

I recently got myself a pair of AKG 701's.....I really want an accurate and impartial way of monitoring the mix of my music....

I'm just wondering if I should need a headphone amp to power these?......I thought plugging them into the MPC would give me enough amplification. But I have to crank the volume up to full volume to get it to a good level.

any thoughts anyone?

I can really recommend the AKG K240DF. Very flat response, comfortable and they're used by alot of studios. But be aware, these are discontinued and there are alot of other AKG 240's. But the K240DF are the ones you're looking for. And you need a decent headphone amplifier to run these.
Another good one is the older Beyerdynamic DT990. They have alot, and I mean alot of bass! They're more fun for beatmaking but not so for mixing...

I use them on my mackie 1640i headphone amp. It's ok, but I will buy a dedicated headphone amp for the k240df soon. Probably the FIIO E12 MONT BLANC. They seem to have enough power to run them.
