I'm considering getting a MPC 3000 to sequence some of my hardware synths. However, I remember reading somewhere that someone had issues with the midi lagging if the sequence was too busy, that the older CPU couldn't quite handle too many notes past a certain point.

Has anyone encountered this? Would the midi lag if I tried to sequence in a jazz style piano solo?

Interesting how much it can take. I don't think it would lag with single track of events, even with all 96ticks stuffed per bar. For instance mpc1000 starts to lag if sequence exceeds 1,5Mb or so, and it's around 100.000 or more events over 100 bars. It lags if sampler is pushed to hard. On sequencer alone - not so much.

I think that sequence has to be waaaay to busy for the 3000 to lag. It never lagged on me.

I think there are better options if you get it just to sequence synths. I think what you want it for is first for drums and sampling records and then control a couple of synths as well.

It's really solid timing wise and I never really pushed sequencing to many synths but it has a lot under the hood, that's what is feels to me at least. You can always ask somebody to make a test for you.

There has to be a LOT going on for it to begin to slow down internally. The manual only mentions the possibility of the processor becoming overtaxed when the sequence involves mixer events.

Honestly curious, what do you consider to be a better option? The MPC3000 has the best timing out of any hardware unit ever, a great sequencer, 4 MIDI outs, 2 MIDI ins.......

i wouldn't call it the best timing out of any hardware. its just a great instrument and one of the greatest mpcs. The 4k's timing is tighter than the 3k for example.

What i think would be a better option is the cirklon.

its a good time to buy a 4k , as prices have fallen, but 3k's price has been rising year after year, if you can find a good deal on a 3k go for it, if not the 4k can be had for less and essentially it does alot more.

but the 3k's ease of use and simplicity is one of its strong points.

good luck

the 3k's cpu is more powerful and i have yet to slow it down ever

i think i only pushed the 60 once just to see how it holds up. it did pretty good, no sloppy notes or anything. if anything, it only takes more time to process when you arrange a song or when you copy a 64 bar sequence or 128 bar sequence, something like that.

it was just a test because mostly i have the drums and and one shots and for that it does the job more than good enough, i also sequence another sampler and send midi clock to another drum machine. i think nobody can really complain about what the 60 has under the hood because if you want it at the center of a studio driving a load of synths, drum machines, samplers etc, you can do something better with a more modern sequencer.
