Hello,

As the title states. How do I make a 4 layered INST multi sample. Got one layer down no problems. I cant seem too find how multiple layers would work?

This is quite important to me.

If the software cant do it is there a way I could say make 4 programs to trigger at different key velocities to each other. So 4 separate programs.

Or is there a way to do this I am missing. I have read the manual! Downloaded it and searched it from my PDF reader. Layers don't seem to get a mention apart from drum samples.

I was hoping the magical Autoset could handle this the way it does one layer multis beutifully. Please tell me this is so.

Regards.

Yes it can be done with DRUM programs.

Im on 128XL but i believe its the same. In program mode cursor over all the way to the left until the pad number is highlighted (for example A01) then press the window button, the layer screen should pop up. You get up to three layers not four.

Thank you Ralph. I originally planned too use drum programs as I had put off any JJOS for years. But it was explained too me on here the Multis I was trying too achieve I would greatly benefit from the auto set feature. So I tried the demo out of XL and was instantly converted with my wallet out in seconds.

This is an odd step though no layers. JJ went too a lot of trouble to mimic a rack mount sampler. Don't get me wrong no layers is not enough to make me keep my rack mount but the layers feature would be a god send. Mind, I make techno so what do I know. 99.99999% of MPC users are hip hoppers and so maybe they dont use this feature as much.

hmmmm, as a work around is there a way you can limit a Program to only trigger at a certain velocity? My idea is make as many programs as you want layers so say 4.

Pgm 1 responds to velocity 0-25 then 2 25-50, and on. That way we could have as many layers as we liked. Again I have scanned the manual and saw nothing that would indicate this is on XL.

I've never tried SIMULT PAD but I understand the concept, that's great if you want some very fat sounding drums and maybe their are some other applications but what the OP is trying to achieve I believe is within Instrument programs and velocity layers so that the samples don't actually trigger at the same time but rather each articulation of the same instrument is triggered individually when a pad/key is pressed at a different velocity.

Loch, I don't believe its possible to chain programs. I've never seen that function. It seems like DRUM programs are still more capable in achieving what you are trying to do. You can set the velocity range for each of those 3 layers you're just not going to be able to get a full 88 key grand sampled in to one program.

Bugfix - Thanks mate but its not what I'm after as Ralph says. Im trying to sample my synth with its filter setting at say low - med - hi. Then layer the 3 samples over the top of each other then select what one plays by how hard you hit the key/pad. This is fairly typical practice for rack sampling guys such as myself. Especially with multi samples.

Thanks for your suggestion though. Im not sure I get your second option?

Ralph - Thanks mate appreciated. Yip, not after anything so huge. Just C and F sharp 5 active spread with 4 layer now reduced too 3.

Such a shame this isn't a part of the Inst options. I feel like JJOS is 'nearly' a rack mount replacement. Seems a waste not to go the whole hog, so close. Mind I'm not going to start dissing JJOS. Loving it so far, but this is disappointing. Maybe it will get added soon. Heres hoping for me anyhow.

I'm talking bout Simult Pad in drum program where you can spread whole 128 velocity over 15 layers, so maybe first try, than say you understand, not opposite way.

Anyway, not a thing you looking for, I just mention this as you were saying there are only 3 velocity layers.
You can have even 128 layers per program, with tricks and sacrficing some other functionality.

What you want is not really possible - 4 layers and full keyboard. Better sample whole audio track from synth, unless it does not have MIDI in for sequencing.

What;s the synth?

Ralph - thanks mate Ill give that a go. Part of the reason of sampling different levels of filter is because digital filters are never as good. As far as analogue synths go (my synths are analogue) the filter is 75% of the sound. Hence very important to capture. As much as I hate modern day DAWs (bore's) and infant everything VSTs as its all just too easy, I had a hardware sampler that could do 4 layer multi sampling back in 1987! It was the S900. Crazy to think how little sampling has come forward since the mid 80s.

Thanks for your suggestion mate. Appreciated.

Bugfix - Yes I do sample full audio tracks mate and use them as loops. Ive been doing this forever and its still the way too go. Thing is sometimes I hit on a great patch (my synths dont have memories) and like to try and immortalise it.

Juno-6, SH-101, TB-303. Had them since my 80s acid house rave days. You'd think Id have done it all by now but for they type of stuff I do they still come up with the goods. Not plunging as my music will make not diff to anyones life but my own what is enough for me but check my link if your interested. Not that much on there but thats because I hate the internet. Ha, I don't even have the internet, having to use my mates connection to post this. Guess I'm old skull. I don't need the answer to everything and realise I'm happy from within, not how much information or stuff I have around me. Im ranting now :)

It's not the box for this task, to sample whole keyboard with 4 layers. S-series would be better.

Mpc 1000 at 44100 is kind of suck when pitching sounds down, so basically when I did something similar, I just sampled low notes like A0 and A0 covers three octaves up to A3 maximum, than I sampled A3 and again set up A3 to play only in up direction, not pitching down at any moment. Just keep in mind to always use keyb samples at 0 tune or positive value. This will retain coherent sound between samples.

Sometimes to loop A0 bass properly I had to sample at A-1 (or just save A0 as 88200Hz on PC ) to get nice sounding sustain loop.
