Custom floppy look alike SD card reader

Hey guys, I thought I share my new custom SD card reader we built into the original XL floppy case to keep the vintage look. It required a few days of work and a $15 IDE card reader. Unfortunately it's not hot swappable but looks awesome!

Now... if you could wire up the red LED on the card reader to the front of the floppy drive where the old green one was on the front bezel, that would be stupid dope!

and maybe it's impossible to do at home without some custom tooled parts.... but if only the eject button ejected the card too...

do you mind share some inside pictures? nice idea, and btw, can you share the cardreader you used? got all my XL's maxxed out but you can not have enough knowledge, there's something to learn everywhere

Saw this the other day...
He modded the floppy drive to read SD cards. Then just threw in the Sd card on the floppy haha

I used this SD-CF to IDE adapter:

It's called NTR ADAP50.

Not sure where can you buy this exact same product in Germany but probably any card reader would work that fits in a floppy case. We had to cut a big hole in the metal and leave just the necessary parts on the side where we drilled 4 holes for the screws. You have to make sure no metal part touch your card reader's soldering points so you do not shortcut your hardware. As you can see on this pic the power cable connects on the left side so we also had to cut a piece out from there to not break the cable. A longer power cable also needed of course.

Since this reader has an on board controller, can it format cards past 1gb on 1.14?

I formatted my 2GB sd card with it but only reads 1GB. Not sure how can I get more.

Sorry it's 1.2 not 1.14.

If you have the ability to do so - I'm sure people are curious if this will work on 1.14

Reason being that on 1.14, some IDE card readers do actually work and will let you create multiple partitions, up to 9gb I believe where as 1.20 only lets you format a max of 1GB FAT partition.

Actually this is sounds interesting. Didn't know that. I wonder if there's any PC software that let you create multiple partitions then just use them in the MPC without downgrading the OS. Not sure if there's any major difference between 1.14 and 1.2 though.

The only difference I've heard of pertains to ATAPI support but with that there were the ability to format past the 1gb mark regardless of card size.
