There's was an update to El Capitan concerning the usb a few days ago. A pain in the ass but you might want try it, maybe even a clean install.

do you have another computer you can try ren with ?, this would help isolating the problem.

if you search online there's a case of complaints for issues with akai's audio interface: hiss/static pop and all that jazz...some users here earlier on also experienced issues with the interface

I've used ren's interface on 2007 and 2010 macpro and it worked without any major issues

It worked pretty well on my 2012 Macbook Pro. I would definitely get the occasional popping/distortion. But not nearly as often as on my newer macbook. Now it's any time i try to sample in.

Do you have the latest hardware drivers? Also, when you get the distortion, have you tried changing the sample rate for your Renaissance audio device in the preferences? Sometimes changing it to a higher sample rate then changing it back again will ping the drivers and can fix the problem.

I know this may sound stupid you tried another usb cable ?

truthfully I would not rely on ren's interface anyway it's a good filler for when you traveling or maybe if you main interface broke...this is pretty much only reason I started using it is because my old interfaces were no longer supported past 10.7 and ren's latest and greatest required osx upgrade.
