what's good interface wise ?

i dont know much about the new stuff tascam is putting out, but a few months ago they put out a 20/20 interface for a grand, and they also put out a 64 track interface/ADDA/standalone multitrack recorder with redundant power supplies hybrid type of rack unit that costs 4000 euros.

you should be able to get the old Fireface for less than 1000, i´ve seen them on ebay from 600-800

Cool yeah given the update & what you said & what you're looking for, I'd say go for a Fireface too. They're great units.

the fireface must be a solid product given it's age and current price, I was eyeing it along with few other interfaces mentioned in the thread

during the search I stumbled upon a very cool interface by Mackie, the onyx satellite, for whatever reason It didn't catch on when it was released.

What a cool box!


I ended up getting rid of the mac pro and going MacBook route in favor of the thunderbolt

the clarity coming out of this thing is surprising actually. I read online where someone compared it to at least one of the RME units. I forget which one.

As far as the Mackie Onxy Satellite, i haven't used or heard it before. I believe it is pretty good, but still doesn't compare to the Fireface 800.

you know what speaking of roland? the old edirol ones (they were red) are metal as you'd expect.. and they are built like a tank. not bad at all..

if you have the cash.. go RME .. that routing is great. If you don't got the cash.. go non RME.

I've read good things about the SPL Crimson, might be worth checking out. It's 4 in 4 out with some real nice extras.

I've been considering getting one myself. Would like to hear thoughts on it from any users

it's not the prettiest but from what I read very good mic preamp and has talk back feature

There is a reason why the RME commands the prices they do. The drivers on pc and mac, and the resell value are a reason to consider going with RME products.

RME would be my ideal choice, but they are expensive.

i had a Tascam US-1200 and it died within weeks (brand new unit). had it "replaced" and it didnt work still., dodgy components used in USB board caused it to fry out

got a refund and bought a focusrite scarlett 18i20 and a behringer ADA8000 so i can track 16 inputs at once - never looked back.

Mix control took some getting used to, but is extremely flexible. It allows multiple routing presets to be made (DAW tracking, mointoring etc) and you can also create submixes for different outputs so if you are recording a band you can give each player a separate mix.

EDIT: this only needs a PC to setup, i run this standalone from a rack 99% of the time without fail.

finding that piece that does just what you want is the best feeling and they come in all shapes, sizes and prices
