reel 2 reel alternatives?!

ive read of peeps backn the day recording into cassete from radio and resampling over and over again..i was htinking of getting a reel 2 reel but they are expensive. so im looking for other alternatives if i can. been wondering if i could use a walkman to record shit then hook it up to mpc..but haven foudn anythign online..anyone here use a r2r or some work around?!

Any tape media. You could use a VHS.

VHS would be a better alternative than cassette unless you want the cassette texture. Guess you can get a speed/pitch knob on some tape decks and that's kinda rad.

medaris it's similar in that you can choose to record in sp, ep, lp mode just like a 4track recorder, so that's dope. I just wonder how much texture you're really going to get from the effort.

@abc it's just like how reel to reel tapes work in regards to recording at different speeds. The better quality you record in, the more tape it uses. So SP would use more tape because its recording more data to the tape, LP records in a much slower mode, reducing the audio quality.

Same stuff with 33/3 45 RPM 12" and LP's where the amount of audio data is spanned across the disc in different sizes and speeds, will reduce or improve the quality.

yeah.. and the price of blank tape reels isn't getting any cheaper... so recording at 7 or 8 inches a second can start to stack up. you might as well record at a slower speed to get the shit sound everyone used to try and avoid since every other element is fairly pristine sounding with a lot of today's equipment... or maybe you could download some studer plug ins to throw on the master bus of your daw.

VHS is really good. The compression is good. I am a fan of tape. I bought some cheap four tracks and they are great sounding. I tried VHS and it sounds even better.
