Bit Conversion on XL

Does the bit conversion feature on the newer XL's work ? When the XL 1st came out I sold my regular 2000 & S950 and copped one for 1 reason alone , the bit conversion feature (gotta love 12 bit) . But when I got the machine home the feature was a b!tch . It was only successful on tiny samlples (like hits) maybe 1/2 the time and never would work if I tried to convert a whole break . It would freeze and I'd have to turn it off when it didn't work . I even let it sit for almost 4 hours 1nce just to see if I was being impatient w/ the process . To end this already lengthy post I returned it, got my old gear back, and never looked twice @ an XL again .
But now it's been quite a few years since then and if they've improved that feature I might swap my stuff again (adjusting the contrast on my reg. 2000 every time I turn it on is getting old) . Any feedback is appreciated . Peace .

It still takes ages to convert to 12-bit on the 2000xl.
But what you could do is get rid of the 2000 but keep the s950 and get a 2000xl. That way you get the best of both worlds.

I bit-convert via sound forge then transfer to xl via zip disk.

Converting on the xl takes forever, the longer the sample the
longer the wait, you've found this out already though.

I think the newer XL is the same as the old one it's just a
different color w/ CF reader installed. I've played with it and
I don't see any difference in the menus and many of the functions.

question similar to the first one.....but do any of y'all MPC Editor users hear a difference if you select 12bit when saving.....i can't tell much of a difference if there is one.....but then again, I'm saving in the 2kxl format and the 12 bit may only work with the 3000...let me know what you think.....?

I know what you're saying.....i tried that a while ago too, and it surprised me how little the sample changed. When i load a sample in my 12bit racksampler the sound changes much more, so there's more to it then just the bitrate.
That's why i wouldn't sell that s950 W. Steele, even if the 12 bit on the mpc worked faster it will still sound different than from an s950. On top of that the s950 has some filters, something the mpc still lacks.

It's the kHz too. When I resample in my XL I do it at 22 kHz/12 Bit/Low quality. Sounds ok. I have only used it on drums though. I wouldn't really mess with it too much. If I really wanted that sound I'd get a s950.

Nah, that's not it either. my racksampler samples at 50kHz, and still sounds grittier that the mpc at 12bit.

It's The Converters That Are Used


And It Can't Be Just Minimized on the basis of numbers........................

Certain Converters sound different and while it does make some difference
when you use bitrate or sample conversion it aint the same as passing that
Vinyl signal through the converter .............which by the way most older
12 bit or even 8 bit samplers had a non-variable filter that you don't even see and that is also apart of it.



Don't Get me wrong I LUV My MPC2000xl but it Won't sound like an Sp
necessarily.

Good lookin' out on the feedback . I've already got my classic 2000 on lock so if the bit conversion makes as little of a difference as you guys say I'm just gonna stick w/ it .
