Hi.

How do you turn local mode off ?

I'm trying to use the MPC pads with the roland aira tr-8 through MIDI but when I hit the pads there's no sound

Thanks.

this probably doesn't have anything to do with local mode.
first of all - what are you trying to to do...trigger the roland with the mpc?
in that case, hook up a midi cable, and on the mpc main screen, scroll down to the bottom of the track screen, and change the area that says 'DRUM:1' (or 2,3,4) to say 'MIDI'.
then set the area next to it to the correct channel and port.
the number is the midi channel and the letter is the actual midi port on the mpc. so if yer roland is on channel 10, plugged into mpc midi out a, you'll choose midi 10A.

Thanks for the relpy.
I can sort of trigger the roland with mpc (when I press play on the MPC the roland plays)but I wanted to use the pads on the mpc to trigger the roland e.g Pad 1- Kick Pad 2-Snare Pad 3- Clap

Thanks again and sorry if doesn't make to much sense.

cool - now actually try what i suggested and you'll figure it out.

you have to know which notes the tr responds to, make sure the tr is able to receive midi like that, and then hit the appropriate pad. you can edit which notes the mpc pads send out, or you can maybe edit the notes the tr assigns to drum sounds. half of this equation in the tr which i know nothing about.

The pads on the TR-8 have specific MIDI notes assigned to them. You're gonna have to go in your MPC and change the MIDI notes on it to the same as the TR-8.

I've tried it but still haven't got it to work. Would something like this work - In the Program menu, go to MIDI and set Local Mode to OFF. This will cause the pad data to only be sent out the MIDI out and not go to the internal sampler.

Thanks for the reply. I've gone through the notes in the programme menu and still nothing. I'm guessing it's something to do with the TR-8 although I really don't know.

Sounds like you may not have the track on the MPC and the TR-8 on the same MIDI channel then. Let's say the kick drum on your TR-8 is MIDI note #57 or something and the first pad on your MPC is MIDI #34. You either need to change the MIDI note on your first MPC pad to MIDI note #57 to trigger the TR-8, or you need to go into your TR-8 and change the MIDI note that's assigned to the kick drum pad on it to #34 or whatever the MIDI note actually is on the MPC. How you assign your notes and what pads you assign them to is arbitrary, you just have to make sure the notes match up between the MPC and TR-8. But even if you do this and the MPC and TR-8 aren't on the same MIDI channel, then you won't get anything to play back. You need to change the track on your MPC to something like 3A, which means it's MIDI channel 3 on MIDI output A, and then set your TR-8 to MIDI channel 3 as well. So in whatever track you want to use the TR-8 on, make sure it's set to the same MIDI channel as the TR-8.

as i said in my first post - this is not a matter of local control.

on both devices, you need to match the channels and the note numbers.

I would do this. Find out what midi channel number the roland is using. Go with 9 for example (it's the best number, trust me). In the sequence mode, sure that the MIDI program you have selected corresponds to the Roland's. Important. In MIDI screen on MPC make sure you are using the correct MIDI channel. On the MPC you have A/B and 1/2 so make sure the actual connection correspond to ones set on the MIDI page and furthermore the sequence page. Play around and see if it makes a difference. I had a machine that for some inexplicable reason only like B and 2. Also, sounds commonsense but MIDI cable connected like this MIDI OUT > MIDI IN and vice versa. Try new cables just in case. See:

Also, check the manual. Also, try booting up the MPC first and then the Roland. This sometimes makes a difference. It should work. Good luck.

^^agree with most everybody here, but 9 is not the best channel, drums are almost always default channel 10. it is an old standard and probably going away, but it would be the first place i tried if channel 1 wasn't working.

edit: if yer counting like a programmer then yea, 9 is correct ....move along tho, nothing to see in this edit.

Thanks everyone for the reply.

I've fix it and yep it was the channels(The drums are on channel 10).

So thanks again for the help(On what was a very basic question). Cheers.

The very second you say anything is "best" it gets followed. Be mindful when using that word.
