Is there anyway to record into the 4k without using its preamp? If not, how nice is it? Because I got a pretty nice preamp already.

It's clean if you did use it, but alternatively you can just load samples from a USB stick or transfer them via AKsys to your hard drive.

Edit: Did you mean the dedicated phono preamp? I'm not sure if using the regular sample inputs bypasses it... :hmmm:

Yeah, meant the dedicated one. I thought about just using usb. But is it true that the machine freezes if you load full songs to it like that?

It's old school usb 1.0, 40-50mb wav from thumbstick will take a little while to load, but no, my 4k has never froze when loading something like that. Maybe people "thought" it was frozen 'cause of that and their impatience?! I have 512mb in my 4k.

On my 1000, sometimes I would take a loop, record it in to my 404 so I could play with the effects, and then record it back into my 1000. Can I not do that with the 4k? Or what if I wanted to record in with my DAP?

@abc, 4k doesn't care what it records, it just records.

Reason I'm asking is because I've tried to record something from my DAP through my preamp to my 1000 before and it sounded like shit. I'm concerned that I might run into the same issue being that the 4k has a dedicated preamp on it.

People use the expeession alot I know but "sounds like shit" isn't really tellin us anything.

Was it distorted, filtered, what? Record gain problem? What?

Real distorted, but I had the record gain all the way down.

Source volume too high?? No matter record gain volume, if source is too high distortion can still happen.

Turn all volumes to 50% and then start there. Crank up till you hear distortion, stop and crank down just a little.
