Other solutions might include getting a Roland SP-404SX or a Beatkangz Beat Thang. Those groove boxes run standalone. Also, an Akai Pro MPX might do good, although it lacks a sequencer.
While the SP does it's job and is quite popular among live artists, it's sound quality needs some getting used to, and the effects are quite crappy. It might be what you need, but try it out first.
I habe never gotten my habds on a Beat Thang though, but the testimonies and tests weren't as great - but it should be usable approximately like an MPC.
My advice is to check them out at the music retailer of your liking. Both groove boxes are operatable on batteries, by the way.
