MPC 2000 Classic without any floppy or disk drive?

I just bought an MPC 2000 off of craigslist. It came with a Zip Drive (for more storage I think??) but no floppies but the startup disk.

Everywhere I read says not to go the floppy route, and instead to install the disk drive. But it's kinda expensive and I don't want to drop that much money on this thing.

Does the MPC have an internal storage? Can I just forget storage, sample a few breaks into it, and start chopping and work with a limited pallet?

Or what are my other options? I don't have a computer that can take floppy's, it's a modern Mac. The USB Floppy drives of Amazon all have terrible reviews that say they don't work with modern computers. This is tough, man :shock:

The floppy disks with sounds are not worth it. You can sample into mpc for free.
I wouldn't buy those disks.

MPC doesn't have internal storage. You store on disks. Once powered off, everything in mpc is gone.

Huh, that's a bummer. Guess I'll have to invest in some floppys afterall. What does my zip drive even do? It looks like it fits floppys but I can't understand it's actual purpose, maybe it's like extra storage or something.

Either way, seems like the gigs of breakbeats I downloaded is worthless now LOL. Time to do it the old fashioned way.

Zip does the same things floppies do.

If you had:

usb floppy OR usb zip drive
OS 1.72 on mpc 2k

you could put those downloaded samples to use.

What drive does your mpc have in it? Pics of your gear so we know what your working with.

Thanks so much for the help man! Got this thing yesterday and I'm so excited to get it working.

Image Here's the front. Few buttons missing, but the guy showed me that it all works OK.

Image I think this is the normal drive, the startup floppy was inside.

ImageHe told me it has the 8 outs extension and an extra effects card installed.

I see the 8 outputs on back, cool.

pg 110, of this manual http://www.mpc-tutor.com/files/mpc-manu ... Manual.zip shows the EFFECTS button, use that to see if effects show up in there, that way you will know if the effects board is installed or not.

If you have PC you you should use a usb floppy drive to format a floppy disk to FAT. The mpc will recognize this format and can use it. You MUST use 8 character filenames on that FAT formatted disk. If you use more than 8 you will have problems, as many people on these boards have found out.

In case you use usb floppy drive on MAC it puts .trash and other files on every disks it uses, delete those files because they drive mpc's insane!

Make sure your using 2k OS 1.72, also available from the RESOURCES tab up top.

Thanks so much! Do you have a recommendation for the USB Floppy drives for a Mac? The $13 ones on amazon seem sketchy based on the reviews, but the only other option is the MPCSTUFF.com one that sells for $55, which is a huge step up in price.
