Data wheel gone crazy!

Been experiencing similar issues on the 1000 since upgrading to OS2XL. Not tried with different OS yet to establish whether hardware or software.

definitely hardware on the 1000 - either a loose qlink or more likely an exhausted rotary encoder. i've been through 3 rotary encoders on the 1000.

How much for a replacement Nym? Cheers.

you need to desolder the old one to install the new,
if you're not comfortable with that,
maybe you should let someone do it for you..

the MPC1000 encoder has 5 contact points (not sure about the 2500 though)
2 of which are just there to fix it to the board

"Silent Data Wheel" on the 2500??

Had the problem with a 2500 and the V2 PCB from mpcstuff, I even changed the encoder but I still have the issue, so, do you think changing the flat flex ribbon cable would make any difference?

The jog makes some random backwards jumps when scrolling clockwise (some clicks make the selection go back and forth and something like one click over three is actually working), but the problem appears only while turning clockwise, scrolling counterclockwise (up in a menu or lowering the tempo for example) works perfectly fine (as every click works for any number of turns in this direction).

When I boot the machine it starts scrolling madly through all sequences like the wheel is turning very fast clockwise until I hit the "down" arrow and then everything works fine (except for the random backwards jumps when using the jog but there's no noise on the outputs nor anything worth worrying).

The latest JJos free (3.13) is installed on this machine.

Bump, here comes a quick update about the data wheel crazyness problem.

I changed the flat flex ribbon cable going from the control board to the mainboard and the startup problems disappeared.

The wheel still has some erratic behavior while scrolling clockwise, but far less than before.


Anybody has any idea about what could cause this kind of problems?
Knowing that the control board PCB and the encoder are new (changed it twice, believing at first that there was a stock issue).

I don't want to change the whole motherboard, I think there might be some bad transistor somewhere but I definitely can't trace the circuit myself. (I could provide the service manual on demand, though, else it's everywhere over the internets)

Did you change the encoder to a metal encoder?

I have the same encoder as in the 1000 or the 2000XL, the one from mpc stuff. I think this is the metal one, isn't it?

I first replaced the whole board and then the encoder because I thought there was some postal degradation, but the problem was still exactly the same after replacing the part. (and I am pretty confident in my soldering skills )

I fixed mine. Press Mode + Other, then Data Wheel Type = 2. This stopped my scroll from jumping like crazy.
